as long as i've been here i don't recall a thread that gives specific numbers regarding this. we all know the screens on the dv7's with nvidia cards come out of the box looking very washed out. i know the gammas are way too high. does anyone have IDEAL settings which make the screen look it's best? mine seem ok with the tweaks i've done, but the screen still looks so much worse than on my external lcd.

    here are my settings:

    brightness: 50
    digital vibrance: 12
    contrast: 57
    gamma: 15

i know this is specifically a problem for the nvidia machines, as the dv5 i had for a short time looked fine out of the box with it's intel gma4500.
i'm getting annoyed by this washed out greyish blue appearance.

You're referring to the 17.4" 16:10 dv7s, right? apparently the new 16:9 ones are LED-backlit and thus not nearly as washed out, which angers me. ing HP should have given us ultra brightview :(

    anyway, my settings are:

    brightness: 53
    digital vibrance: 25
    contrast: 58
    gamma: 33

I also upped my blue gamma to about 38 because the screen did not seem colorbalanced (whites had a pinkish tint, for example). the screen looks good at its optimal viewing angle but the biggest issue is that the viewing angle is terrible. the top of the screen starts to fade to black unless you swivel the screen closer and then the bottom starts to get severely washed out. i'm not sure if it's a backlighting issue (which ultra brightview or LED backlighting would have fixed) or a panel quality issue (which is just HP being cheap s)

Actually the older dv7 is 17", not 17.4" and the colors look much better than on the newer 17.3" dv7 with LED backlit. The angles on the LED backlit version are very tight, and the colors are stupid.

luckily, 99% of my pc usage is with my 24" external, but i have tweaked my settings to this on my dv7t-1200:

    brightness : 50
    digital variance : 20
    contrast : 62
    gamma : 16

this configuration is definitely not optimal, but the best i can come up with at this point. i will note there is still a slight bluish tint which lowering the blue gammas would probably cure.

    It's all about preference.

There was a thread on here some time ago about the digital vibrant option being raised ever so slightly. It could make the colors look much fuller. However, too high and your screen will look as if it's bleeding.

    Sorry for the late reply.
