Are these basically the same laptop except the Dv7 is made for mass retailers?

The reason I ask is NewEgg has the dv7-1020us for $1399 minus $50 rebate.
I went to HP and configured pretty much the same laptop and came out with $1664

Only thing I would rather have a better cpu than the blu-ray drive. But then I guess I could change the cpu eventually?

I ordered one of these from buy.com. The original price was 1437.99 US I believe, but I had a 5% coupon to lower it to 1366.09. It's a good deal but I would've preferred the higher res option and better processor for a little more, but I'm still satisfied. Should come on Wednesday.

I had a couple questions on the 1020us configuration as I was pricing a similar customized configuration. I don't really need tuner or bluray (mostly a work computer) but they don't hurt.

How much of a dropoff in real world use is there from the T9400 to P8600 to P7350? Not talking hardcore Photoshop or video, but lots of regular use and multitasking?

How much of a difference is there between 320GB 5400 and dual 160GB 7200? If you get the single drive can you add a second one later?

The price difference is pretty significant especially considering no tax from Amazon.com, so I might settle for the slower processor and hard drive, but not if the difference is noticeable.

Thanks for any feedback and advice.

Non at all for everyday programs. Even my older T7500 wouldnt make a difference. The true raw power of cpu's can only be harnessed by intensive programs.

320gb 5400rpm is overall faster than a 160gb 7200rpm due to platter density.

    A 320gb 5400rpm is equal to a 200gb 7200rpm.

Thanks Flipfire. I'm a programmer so will find myself in front of this computer 8-12 hours a day so the little speed difference add up, but I rely on mostly simpler programs and nothing high horsepower (I care much more about my external monitor, keyboard, and mouse...the things I actually interact with). I think I will likely settle for the added value of the dv7-1020us thanks to your input. Still reading up on any Vista x64 compatibility issues, but I don't expect any.

It doesn't come with a fingerprint scanner. What kind of conspiracy is this ??
    hehe
Guess I don't really need one, Just a fingerprint reader sounded all James Bond-ish etc.

Also the Amazon one mentions it comes with the BrightView Widescreen Infinity Display where the NewEgg one just says brightview widescreen. I notice the Amazon's costs a bit more so maybe that's why.

I ended up cancelling the Amazon.com order and getting it from circuit city instead for less and on the same day. I can confirm it DOES have hte brightview infinity, and I assume that every 1020us is exactly identical. I was concerned and unsure seeing it listed on Amazon but not elsewhere, but it definitely is there, and is pretty cool but nothing too amazing.

    Kaufax,

How cool did the laptop goes? Do you feel any lag problems due lower CPU or isn't noticiable?

Did u play any pc games with it?

    Considering buying one too :p
