I received one as a replacement for a dv7-4290 (the Intel Chip problem) I've only had it about a week but so far I would say it's great!. The only thing I would change if I was doing a customized system is that I would have put in a faster disk drive (the 1TB is 5400 rpm) in my case I would have been willing to give up space in exchange for speed. In the odd but true category the only change between the 4295 and the 4290 is that the 4295 comes with 8GB instead of the 4290's 6GB. The reason I went for the 4290/95 was because I needed a system quick so I took one of the pre-configured systems instead of doing a customize system.

BTW, At least in my case I think HP handled the Intel Chip issue well, they sent me the 4295 to replace the 4290 and gave me a week to transfer the information from the 4290 to the 4295.

The current model, available for order since 3/13/2011, has been shipping (sporadically) since about 3/30/2011. I ordered it 3/23 to ship 4/8, and now they're hoping they can ship it on 4/20.

Differences include Beats Audio instead of Altec Lansing, better touchpad, backlit keyboard no longer available, and most importantly, the graphics chip discussed here is available as a $25 option.

How important to you is GPU power, how much did you pay compared to what a matching custom configuration would cost at HP.com (using coupon code NB6973) and are you willing to wait 2-5 weeks for a custom build of the new model?

I don't understand the differences you mention. both the 4290 and 4295 have/had Beats Audio and the same 1GB ATI 6570 Video card, and neither had the backlit keyboard. The 4290 and 4295 are/were both pre-configured systems where you can't change the configuration.

Backlit keyboard was available in the 4xxx series custom configurations, but not the two prebuilt models you mention.
If you want it in the 4295, you can order one from HP parts and drop it in. It is not available on the new 6xxx models, but there is speculation that the Envy 17 keyboard can be adapted.

The specs here mention Beats Audio and HP triple bass reflex subwoofer, so maybe the dv7-4xxx had the same audio as the 6xxx. I'm pretty sure the dv6-4xxx had Altec Lansing.
I could have sworn the dv7-4xxx had Altec speakers too, but either I was wrong or the HP web developers were drinking vodka while updating the web page again.

I have that notebook and it seems like a good unit. I intended to upgrade the HHD to a faster SATA III unit but have been told by HP Tech support that it only has SATA II ability. I was shocked that a Sandy Bridge notebook would not have SataIII ports. I dont know if tech support is right about this or not and I hate to tear it apart to find out. Wish someone who knows could chime in and tell me whats up.
