    Hi All,

Ever since I have had my dv7-7008tx, I have had nothing but constant issues and headaches, mainly because of the Nvidia 650m 2GB driver. I have reinstalled my windows several times (a couple times just with the HP Recovery and a couple with a CLEAN install) because of this issue. Yet this same issue keeps occurring.

Basically, the driver keeps crashing and so I have to uninstall the software and reinstall the drivers. I have tried every single driver including the OEM ones to the latest BETA 304.79 driver. Basically, this message comes up when I click on the NVIDIA control panel:
NVIDIA display settings are not available. You are not currently using a display attached to an NVIDIA GPU.

I do realise that the proper drivers are not out for 650m but is there anything I Can do for the driver to at least stop crashing? I have done everything from even using driver sweeper to uninstall and delete all the files from the registry.

Any help and guidance would be great.

    Thanks all.

Huh. I have the dv6-7009tx variant. I'm also having this issue. But the thing is that this started happening to me when I overclocked my system. It didn't happen immediately, kinda waited for me to think it was stable in that speed and then it started BSOD'ing.

What error code are you getting? Are you getting BSODs or just the "Display Driver has stopped working and has now recovered" messages?

For starters, I'd suggest you uninstall both the Intel and NVIDIA display adapters, reinstall the Intel driver using the download links on the HP Software thread, and download the 304.79 Beta through nvidia.com. If it still does not work you might have to consider returning to where you purchased your laptop from.

Thanks Kisetsu. I don't even know what overclocking is so I don't think I am doing that to my laptop like you are. I dont get BSOD but the driver just always crashes. What happens is is that the screen quickly flickers and then my speedfan program shows "00' as temperature of the GPU meaning its crashed. And when I go into device manager, the apostrophe is there. And when I go into NVIDIA control panel, that message of " NVIDIA display settings are not available. You are not currently using a display attached to an NVIDIA GPU" comes up.

I will ring HP and get them to exchange this laptop. Nothing but constant headache from day one regarding this. Kept waiting for an official 650m Driver to come out but I don't think that is the problem in my case! Must be a faulty GPU or something

i've heard something about Windows unloading graphics card drivers after some error.

it should be a generic problem which you can search google for a solution.

I doubt the gpu hardware itself is defective.

I have a dv6-7xxx. The latest driver, 304.79, did not work with my laptop. The HP-provided driver worked for me originally. Make sure you've tried the latest HP driver. Then, consider trying version 304.48, a beta driver.

the 304.79 drivers now have an updated .inf, I think. It didn't work on mine the first time I downloaded it. But now it does.

    Hi all,
I'm new in the forum. My name is Daniel, from Argentina.
A month ago I bought the dv7-7000 Quad Edition with nvidia 650M and I have the same problem.
The only difference with your case is that when I restart the notebook, the nvidia 650m is there again.

Have you found a solution ?
Have you called HP? Have they given you an answer?
    Thanks

I have the same problems as danito8905.

At random times during different tasks the 650m will crash and my computer will switch to the integrated card in the CPU.
If I try and open the nvidia control panel, it will say

"NVIDIA Display settings are not available

You are not currently using a display attached to an NVIDIA GPU"

After i reboot the 650m is up and running fine...Maybe its something driver based ?

Yes, that happens to me too.

I note that when this happens, the DVD drive tries to read, and also the option to suspend, in the start menu is disabled.
Is it a problem of the chipset?

I've chatted with technical support HP for, but did not give me an answer.
Just update the BIOS and use the Recovery system. I have already updated the BIOS and the problem continues.

Does anyone have any way to fix it?

    Thanks.

PD: Sorry for my poor English.

Hm, I've had this happen to me recently. I wonder what is the actual problem with the crash. I really don't want to reinstall the drivers but if it happens again I would consider it.

Well, it happened again. I guess I will update to the beta driver and see what good it does me. The weirdest thing is I don't even know what triggers it. The last one I was just browsing on firefox, had the computer freeze, and bam you can see on speedfan it's no longer there.

Is it possible speedfan is messing with it?

It is not speedfan because I have replicated this issue and do not have speedfan installed. With me initially I had issues with the latest driver from HP crashing only when I closed the lid on my dv6tqe 7000. Then it suddenly started doing exactly what is explained here. At the time I had a GPU gadget installed and would notice no clock speed updates and the temperature read 0 C. I then proceeded to install the beta drivers which fixed the crashing entirely but presented me with another issue( One thing I would suggest is resetting everything to defaults in nvidia control panel and then going into device manager and uninstalling the drivers and then let windows determine and install the best driver for you)... The core and memory clock speeds will now not downclock to idle. They stay at 745mhz and 2000mhz respectively. I can sometimes force the clocks to idle with nvidia inspector but it doesn't always work. This results in poor battery life: 2 hours instead of 4.5-5 hours. Has anyone else experienced this?

i stopped using speedfan a week ago and the video card is working fine so i guess the problem was that program.

    UPDATE:

I've had this issue off and on. It goes away for awhile and then comes back. I think it is tied to 'HP Cool Sense' which is software that came pre installed on my computer to manage fan usage.

Issue is with recent updates to 'Cool Sense' they have removed any ability to change settings or even see what it does

Anyways long story short... I turned it off and not only has my graphics card not crashed but my laptop is running cooler!

I will continue to test this the next few days and post if anything new comes up. (Stupid HP junk)

    Hi all,
in my case I always had "CoolSense" off. Apparently the problem is between Speedfan and video driver.

Currently with the latest version of the driver (327.23), speedfan (version 4.49) always shows 00 for the temperature of the GPU and the driver did not return to crash.
