I noticed that one, or several, default HP applications prevents some programs from installing, usually older software using older installers. The solution, for me, was to "End Task" on as many HP-branded processes as possible. After installation of my software, I would simply reboot and everything worked fine.

One of the "trouble" programs, for sure, is "QLBCTRL.exe" ... Even on the first shut-down, I have had to end task on this process in order for the laptop to shut down.
