I have started to notice some more problems with the software on my new dv8000t. Frequently, when programs stop responding and I have to end task on them, dumprep.exe (Dump Report Utility) will max out the CPU usage to 100% on one or both cores. This is very annoying since the computer grinds almost to a halt ... the mouse barely moves across the screen. dumprep.exe will continue to max out the CPUs until I manually end task on all instances of dumprep.exe in the task manager. I'm not sure if this behavior is windows related or hardware related ... it has already happened with several pieces of software on this laptop.

that happened on my computer too! i own a dell, so its definetly software related, you've got nothing to worry about; in term of hardware causing the error. The most recent things that happened to me that cause the dumprep to cause a halt is when i view a website through internet exporer (gameshark.com) and the seems to require java, then it just froze and the computer becomes unresponsive, so i end task internet explorer, and all this (more than one) dumprep.exe come showing up (maybe bcoz i view more than one of those site) it takes quite a while until the dumprep is finished; but throughout the whole ordeal the computer only comes to a halt; probably for half a minute or so from time to time...

So, its alright, its not your computer, its the software problem.

    desktop:
    DELL dimesion 8400
    3.2Ghz Pentium 4 HT
    1GB RAM
    160GB 7200RPM HD

Perhaps you have a virus or some other malware.

It sounds like one of your programs is crashing, dumprep.exe kicks in to capture error information and locks up.

Check My Computer | Properties | Advanced tab | Startup and Recovery Settings button and see what Write debugging information is set to. I have mine set to (none). If yours is set to Kernel or Complete memory dump, that may be causing the problem? (Guessing.)

Doing to usual virus/spyware/worm sweep is definitely a good idea.

Thanks for the confirmation. I had "small memory dump (64kb)" selected, so I'm guessing that was causing some of the long error reporting sessions with dumprep.exe.

I'm pretty good at staying on top of viruses, trojans, adware, spyware, malware, rootkits, etc., so I'm not too concerned about those.

Actually that should not be it. That type of memory dump only occurs when you have a total system faliure (BSOD).

I had the same issue, it disappeared when I reformated after I had my OS go corrupt from trying to upgrade. It could be caused by bloatware or by a corrupt system file on the drive, but that's just speculation.

in my case it was the Creative audigy sound driver causing high CPU usage. I just uninstalled it for lack of driver support. Vista manager may also helps.
