My dv9000 AMD, started cycling on and off and would not boot up It would try and get to the screen just showing a flashing cursor, I swapped hard drives and that solved the problem, The hard drive I used was from a dv6000 , it worked for about 4 months then it started taking longer and longer to wake up once I opened the screen. Sometimes it would not wake up at all and I would have to restart the computer.

Now it is just cycling on and off, but it is not trying to boot up it won't get to the boot screen before it shuts down, when I turn it on it will start to access the cd-rom then stop it never accesses the harddrive, I tried swapping harddrives with a working one and still nothing. I put the original recovery discs in it and it won't access them they start to spin up but then the laptop powers down.

    Try this:

When/if you see your hp screen press Esc. If your hard drive is dead or not being detected then the only thing that will show up in the boot options will be your DVDRW.

Take off the hard drives completely and boot into your BIOS. Let it idle for 20mins or so, if it shuts down then you might have an overheating problem

Its probably the switch/inverter , you just need to buy a new one . FunnyX should tell you how to do it as he knows how to pull laptops apart

Sounds like LCD Tab Separation, the way to tell is to grab the 2 top corners pull 1 forward and push 1 back...

you should see a fluttering in the picture, you also may see a bunch of vertical lines flashing from top to bottom. If you see that it means your LCD is defective and you'll need to send it in for service.

I can't get to the hp screen, When laptop is off and I touch a quick play key it will start cycling on and off. I tried plugging a monitor up to the put and it showed nothing.

    Could it be bad memory?

Re-seat the memory individually .. its quite easy to do. 2 screws, it should be just below your touchpad

ok I took the memory and hd out and put in another laptop it worked that rules out, them I have the laptop apart and checking for loose parts. What can I check to see if the laptop is savable? When It cycles on and off I don't hear any beeps. How do I check for a bad mb? Is it time to get anotherone?

When you say cycling off what do you mean?

Does the power light blink but the media touchpad stay lit?

Did you try putting the ram in one at a time in each one of the slots?

I have a screw set but cant seem to get any of the screws off of my hp dv6000z I'm having the same issues as stan is, I sent it in for repair once4 they replaced the thing that connects to the power button then about 4 months later it did it again and they replaced the motherboard. well at least thats what they said they replaced. right now its not under warranty :/. the screen doesn't even come on it stays black it does come on a little bit its just a brighter black than when its off and it doesn't even go to the hp logo screen. from about monday to today it would start to freeze during the windows load screen on xp where the little bar moves back and forth and the windows logo is there i would hold the del key really hard almost pushing down on something located under where that key is and it would start to move again. at 3-4 amish today is when it started to not come on at all once this morning i did get the bios screen but it froze there the led's come on but thats it and the quickplay buttons make noise.
