I'm wondering if this is a flaw or this is how it was designed. The dv9000 has its own number pad, and to activate it you hit the num lock key. sounds like a great idea. however, when i hit the numlock key, the number keys work, but it also changes some of the letter keys on the keyboard into numbers.

It changes UIOP into 456* and jkl; into 123-

Is there something messed up with this laptop, or is this how it was designed? I thought the point of having a separate number pad is so you can use a keyboard and the number pad at teh same time, now it acts like alot of other laptops out there that don't come with a separate number pad.

Is there a system option to modify this? Any help?

How much warranty do you have left?

i got my laptop about 5 months ago. So my warranty is still good. Im not sure if this problem existed before. About a month and a half ago my laptop just shut off one night and never turned on again. It just died. Nothing worked. Brought it to various places, nobody could get anything from it or see anything wrong. I had to send it in and they ended up replacing the motherboard. I hoped this wasn't a problem with that... it took 3 weeks last time to send it and get it back. And i have a month left in the semester, so i definitely can't send my laptop back until after that.

So i guess this is just a flaw with my computer :(

Sadly, yes. But when school's out, I'd make them fix it right this time, or replace it.

My DV9000 worked fine until HP replaced the motherboard, now I have exactly the same problem as you are reporting. I sent in a trouble ticket and HP is supposed to take care of it. I think they screwed up something inside the notebook. Did you see my other thread?

    Did they replace your motherboard,
... or send you a refurbished model with the scratched up Genuine Windows Sticker on the bottom? :D

If the sticker is scratched, that means you got a refurbished unit? Hey, I think my brand new DV9207 has a scratched up Windows sticker too now that you mention it. The sticker has like a small circle with two stripes running through it. I am worried man. How do I know for sure if mine is scratched up? Can someone post a picture? Thanks.

I was only kidding about the sticker. :D That's what I thought for a month, before I found out it was supposed to be the " new" Microsoft Antipiracy Sticker. I searched it on HP's site. Everyone with a new HP computer thinks they got a refurb and I'm still not sure about trusting that I don't!!
Now, what's the real truth? Would you trust HP? :nah:

Just purchased a dv9000z and it has the exact same problem with the keyboard or should I say 2eyb6ard?

However, in addition it also tells me my Windows Activation Code is invalid and the Internal Network card doesn't work.

I tried to check the warranty status of my serial number online at HP and it says the Serial # and the Model don't match. :( I think it must have something to do with putting the wrong System Recovery DVD in, because it tried to work for a while before crapping out. I guess it permanently etched my motherboard with the wrong model number.

    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/WarrantyLookup.jsp?

Warranty information could not be calculated for this unit. Please check that you entered the correct serial number and product number. If the warranty information still cannot be calculated, please submit a support case, and include your serial number and product number. (D03)

The replacement notebook did fix the keyboard problem.
That sucks that you've got the same problem.

Yea I discovered that little numberlock bug on my 2000z. I was kinda miffed trying to type...but i realized hitting the fn key and the scroll numberlock key did the trick. It must be a bug in vista and the BIOS that will be updated. Wish I knew enough about the system to change that issue on startup.

On a sidenote if you use an external keyboard it will not be affected...just the notebooks keyboard.

Hey guys. It is a legit sticker. I just bought Vista Ultimate 64 from newegg.com. The disk was in all the original packaging and yes, the sticker looks exactly as described above.

Its not a bug between Vista and the BIOS or anything its more than likely faulty hardware in the machine. Others who have Vista dont have this issue. I have the issue myself and at one point I didnt while still using Vista 64bit. I even tried a clean install to see if some update might have caused it and it didnt. The only differences between using an external keyboard is hardware used to make it all happen. Trying an external keyboard is even one of HPs troubleshooting methods. Had an external keyboard failed as well then its a software issue but being it doesnt its hardware.

I bought my dv9000z last week. I'm running vista home (32bit) and the numlock/10-keypad worked just fine until yesterday when I did some Windows Updates. Tech support told me my BIOS is up to date and that I should run the spyware checker... *sigh*

I'm no longer sure this is a random bad hardware issue.

Well after a very very painful hour with HP's tech support I found out something very interesting (besides how to flash bios and being told that reinstalling Vista will solve all my problems.)

When I went to device manager there are two keyboards listed; HID Keyboard Device, and Standard 101/102 Keyboard. If I uninstall the HID Keyboard and reboot the full sized keyboard will type fine with numlock turned on for a brief time. Then Windows automatically finds the keyboard and installs it and I'm back to the same old problem with numbers instead of letters when numlock is on.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to keep the second keyboard from reinstalling itself?

very interesting rlee23. keep us posted if you are able to resolve it with HP support. Mine worked a week and then occured. I returned it and reordered another CTO and it hasn't happened to it.

    hi guys!
I had the same problem and i've found out something very interesting:
when i logged into my winxp home i had to insert my password which comprised a numeric character. I always pressed NumLock + 2 (the 2 on the right side) because my password was techno2.

Another day i tried not to press the numlock+2 button on the logonscreen and used the 2 above the "W" instead - then i had no problems to use the normal letters + the right numeric characters at the same time!!!! i don't pressed the numlock button and everything worked fine!

would be cool if i get some replies..

I have looked through this forum and have experienced some of the symptoms you all have reported, but somehow after talking 6-7 HP techs and scouring the internet, i was able to put in an end to the NumLock ordeal.

My problem started when i installed Stardock Window Blinds...It would not function well so i unistalled it, then after that windows vista said it was not a genuine copy so i had to go through Microsoft and HP so i could get an authentitacion code...then about 2 weeks later, my numlock would work, but the right side QWERTY keypad was going crazy with a number Overlay: m=0 j=1 k=2 u=4 i=5 o=6

So what i foudn out that worked for me, (i'm on a Pavilion dv9308nr)
1.Unistall Both Keyboard Drivers that are in the Device Manager, DO NOT RESTART YOUR PC just yet.

2.Download the BIOS Update corresponding to your Laptop, mine was updated (Flashed) from the January BIOS, to the October. After it is done it will shutdown automatically. This was the one I used http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...-1&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3370371&os=2093

    3. Turn on the computer. The keyboard drivers will automatically install but the problem will persist. On the HP website, download the latest nVidia chipset drivers and restart your pc once more. This was the one i Used http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...-1&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3370371&os=2093

    4. After this, the problem should have gone away. When i did the first time, the quick launch buttons made a disgusting high pitched noise when pressed, so i updated the quick launch software also.

Hopefully this works for you, i don't know if this is a permanent fix but it sure gets rid of it for the time being. Luckily there are Store warranties that replace your pc if it were accidentaly dropped from 15 feet high;-).

Hit me up for any questions.

Thanks so much..... The function (Fn) + num lock works great for me. I have an HP notebook - model number dv9308nr. I had the same problem with some keys and the num-lock. After I did Fn+num lock everything was fine. By the way, I also did call HP and they recommended that I ship it to them for repair... oh well, thank goodness I found this site.

    Hi
I have a HP dv9000. I also have a problem with my num lock. I found out when you start your computer as long as your num lock is on, you should be fine. If for any reason you shut your num lock off you need to restart your computer with the num lock ON. If you leave it on you shouldn't have the problem with your keyboard. This is something HP should address because as I have found there are a lot of people with the same problem. I also had a problem with my Windows Vista. My computer was telling me that my Windows Vista was not a Genuin Copy. I might be a victim of Conterfeiting. I called HP and the only thing they could do (besides charging me) was to restore my computer.
