I know that the spec sheets list that the max memory for the HP dv9030us is 2GB, but would it be possible with a BIOS update to install 3 or 4gb?

    Thanks, Zak

I believe if your BIOS is F.25 or higher you should be fine. F.25 adds support for 2 gb memory modules.

I have 4GB RAM on my DV9040US, but only 3GB is recognized by the OS. BIOS says 4GB RAM and when you press Fn+Esc it will show up as 4GB (since it queries the BIOS and not the OS). But all you can use is still 3GB at the most.
