My dv9500 showa the % of battery remaining when I move mouse over the battery icon on the task bar. My son has a Dell 1420 (brand new) and it shows Battery % and time remaining.
Is there a setting to control this?
Should the dv9500 show both?

I'm almost 100% sure that showing both the percentage of the battery left and the time remaining is a Dell feature. I have a HP for myself at home and a Dell laptop from work and the HP only shows the percentage remaining where Dell shows both, so I'd say that its a feature that Dell offers and not HP.

As far as I know, most notebooks do not show the time.
My Sager 5750 only shows the %.
You can download Notebook Hardware Control. It's easy to use and has many great features (monitor temperatures). It can also give you an time estimate on your battery. -
Only dell shows the time as far as i know -
My old Compaq V1000 (otherwise marketted as HP NC6000 in other regions) had the time remaining as well as battery %'age figures. I was somewhat disappointed that my new HP DV6000 didn't.
I think most newer notebooks do away with the time remaining figures, as they could either be too variable to estimate correctly, or maybe these days people just don't focus on it much anymore - as an increasing number buyers are getting notebooks as an alternative to desktops. On a DV9500 (and other large non-portables), the time remaining could be scary countdown timer in minutes as opposed to hours. -
my HP 8510w has % and time for the battery reading.
dv9500 Battery % vs. time remaining
