I own a dv9500t model which has been working fine since I bought it in October 2007. Today out of the blue the screen went black while I was working on the computer. What does this mean? I am still able to use the computer via an external monitor.

What can I do? What are my options?

    Thanks

    Alex

Either the LCD ribbon is loose or the wires are frail.

LCD screen could be dead but unlikely.

well i guess im screwed then... my lcd came back to life last night for a few minutes then black again.... I'm stuck using the laptop via an external monitor.

what would you do? send it back for repairs? how much would this cost since i dont have a warranty? im guessing its the motherboard from what i have read online in several places. Is it risky for me to keep using the computer with the external monitor or can something else break?

    thanks for your help!

HP has extended warranties on certain computers.

Edit: looks like you're out of luck as the dv95xx aren't listed. Though since you said the LCD came back to life, means that there is a loose wire. Since your laptop does not have warranty, you should open it up and check to make sure all wires/plugs are secure.

Though, Flipfire would how to handle this situation better than I, perhaps you should PM him.

And as for the motherboard being fried, it's not likely since if it was the motherboard, you wouldn't get any picture via an external monitor either.

I do not believe its your motherboard. Its more likely just the ribbon/cable is loose/frailed from opening and closing the lid overtime. Thats why its working intermittently.

HP will probably give you ridiculous quote of $200-400 when it could actually cost you nothing.

Do you have any experience with assembling/disassembling desktops or notebooks?

Since your out of warranty, you can DIY. We have video guides and service manuals if you need reference.

wow this is great stuff!! thanks guys!

    Harper2.0....

like you mentioned I checked and the list and the dv95xx series is not covered by the extended warranty :(

    flipfire....

I guess im pretty happy that it came back for a few minutes... i just cant understand how it can just work fail out of the blue without even moving the computer? can this still be a loose wire?

I have NEVER opened a laptop more than to install new ram and hard drives... that is it! On the other hand I have built desktops by myself many many times.. I dont know what to expect when I open a laptop... I actually dread it! But i guess i have no choice... What will this loose wire look like are there any guides on disassembling dv9500 series laptops?

flipfire, Where are these "video guides and service manuals" you speak of?

Will opening my laptop void my right to send it in for repairs via hp if things turn for the worse?

    Thanks for your help guys!
