    1) do you have a dv9500t?
    2) do you have either 250GB or 2x250GB (500GB) 5400RPM hard drive configurations?
    3) are your 250 Hard Drive(s) samsung model HM250JI?

If yes to every question: does your hard drive make a rather noticable knocking noise at random times, causing the HD activity light to go solid for a second?

Since day 1 of having this laptop, i get this sound on both of my hard drives. All tests return negative, saying that there are no problems. There are no S.M.A.R.T. errors. And Windows works fine, except for a minor stall when these knocking sounds occur.

My HD temps are routinely 46ish (for the system drive) and 36ish for the secondary drive.

HP has been delaying my replacement drive for a while now...

Yeah I know the temps are normal. I was just mentioning them should anyone think that heat might be related.

you think a rather noticable, random "knock" noise coming from either hard drive which causes a brief 1 second system stall (and a solid HD activity light) is normal?

Obviously depends on how loud it is, but it just sounds like the operating system is caching something.

Sounds just as loud as a jiggle of the screen latch release button.

I have the dual 250GB drive setup, and I have never had a knocking noise from either of them. Nore have I had the light come on and freeze the computer.

you can always try run a hard drive self test, just to see if the hard drives are still good. To run that you have to get into the BIOS by tapping F10 during boot, then to diagnostics, and then do a long check on both hard drives. It will probably take 90 minutes or more per hard drive because of the size of your hard drives.

yeah i have. they turn up negative (no problems).

At first it was just the primary HD, which led me to believe the primary was bad. Then i started to hear the secondary as well, which leads me to believe either 1) both models are bad, 2) something is a little funky with the laptop, or 3) samsung should stick to LCD's and LCDTV's.

I asked for a replacement back in mid november. They keep pushing it back citing "backorder". Maybe it is because of the holidays.

well when replacing a hard drive, HP just delivers you a brand new unit without much hassle. Ive done it several times before.

Do you need to mail the old corrupt ones back to them?

yeah. this current replacement they asked for a Credit Card hold (as collateral) which they would release when they received the defective unit.

in the past they didnt want a hold, but that was probably because tech support caused trouble by replacing my 7200RPM drive with a 5400RPM drive.
