First off, I am aware of the big hp webcam thread - it only deals with driver problems (i.e the computer can see the webcam but it doesn't work) - this is a different, separate issue which deserves a new thread.

The HP Pavilion dv9565ea (AMD TL-60, Nvidia chipset, pdf spec sheet) laptop has a built in webcam that hangs off the USB bus. If I boot the machine connected to a 7 port (powered)usb 2.0 hub the webcam isn't listed in device manager and cannot be accessed at all.

It is as if the machine has no webcam. There are no unrecognised devices or devices flagged with an exclamation mark, it isn't there at all.

The webcam will only reappear after disappearing if the laptop is shut down and all power removed (battery out, power lead disconnected), simply rebooting doesn't work. Thereafter booting with the hub disconnected results in the webcam working. I've tried two different hubs (a cheap no brand hub and an expensive belkin hub) with the same result. If the hub is connected after the computer has booted all devices work.

There is a conflict between the webcam and a skype telephone adapter - if both are used at the same time then skype crashes, however the "disappearing webcam" effect happens even when the skype adapter is not connected.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions on how to further diagnose or correct this issue would be much appreciated.

While I think the solution is probably going to be different for the exact problem you are having with that model of laptop, I think the underlying issue is similar to that of "the big hp webcam thread" I started.

When I was doing testing, much of what I determined was happening was that QuickPlay would connect to the webcam on the USB bus, but it would then not release itself after the program was shut down. Much of what I was trying to do as a solution was to "power down" the webcam's connection to the USB bus and thus be able to restart its connection. I actually was able to do this one time but could never duplicate the procedure.

What I eventually determined was that the drivers were the root of the problem I was having and what was not allowing the program to release its connection to the USB bus. Rebooting was enough of a "shutdown" in my case to get it to release its connection to the USB bus so that it could be used again. In your case it looks like it needs even more, which is pretty strange.

I found Chicony drivers from Acer, but maybe there are analogous Ricoh drivers for your cam, assuming it's not a Chicony cam.

Anyway, I hope you find a solution, and I hope what little info I have to give you on what I was finding helps you out.

I have exactly the same problem on my dv9500t CTO NB. The integrated webcam only works when a max of 3 devices are connected. Once I boot the machine I can start plugging in more devices but if not the webcam wouldn't be recognized by windows.

    Any recommendations?

BTW I installed the Chicony Acer drivers on the webcam and these work fine. Except for the current issue.

I have had the same issues. I have a dv9831ca and the webcam only works if no USB items are plugged in. My initial issue of the non-working webcam was solved by the thread by DylanBennett after I installed the Acer driver. (Thanks alot to DylanBennett by the way for all the time and effort to solve that mess!!!) But of course, like all other PC issues, something else is now wrong.

After reading ccristian2000's post, I thought about the conflict and possibly the sequence in which USB items are loaded.

I currently have a 4 port USB hub attached which was I figure was causing the conflict. So I started up my machine with no USB items plugged in. And as usual, the cam worked. I think plugged in the hub, waited for the USB items to load, and sure enough, the webcam still worked!!!

So, the problem can easily be solved by simply plugging in your USB items after you start up your laptop.

Just another way we have to adapt our lives for the betterment of PCs everywhere!!!
