im trying to upgrade a dv9702ea with an ssd but it will not load a windows cd no matter what. It says no operating system found unless i put in the old hdd.
Dvd set to 1st boot device
both xp and 7 discs tried which work elslewhere
    tried external dvd drive
ssd works fine on my desktop
    latest bios

i read somewhere that the laptop checks for the hp recovery paptition and for windows cds it also checks against its mobo tattoo to verify it is an original oem disc.

How can i install a new ssd with a clean 7 install on this laptop

Is the SSD visible in bios?

Laptop doesn't do any checking. It's the installed windows that checks if laptop matches certain requirements for activation. Naturally only branded oem discs contain windows that does so and that has nothing to do with these installation problems :(

Have you tried pressing F9 on startup, and selecting the CD/DVD drive? Will the computer boot from the CD with the SSD not installed?
I have installed windows on my HP using recovery disks, and using a retail version of windows, and an OEM version of XP with no problems. This was with a new hard drive, not an SSD, but it should work the same.
You say the SSD works in your desktop...is it bootable on your desktop? Is it formatted NTFS?

I think there might be something wrong with the mobo. Whatever I did I couldn't get it to boot from a DVD drive (internal or external). I ended up installing 7 from a USB drive and it worked.

PXE wouldn't work either because the MAC and UUID got reset to all 0s so that's why I suspect mobo fault. Used Macmakeup to spoof the mac and the laptop is now rocking with a vertex 2 :)
