Hey all. Per my user name, I have a dv9700t, specs are at bottom of post. Been a lurker here for 18 months, just joined needing some guidance. Really happy with this laptop, and the following is my very first problem.
Tried searching this forum to find an answer, but can't seem to hit a 100% accurate thread to how I would discribe my LCD problem. Here is my issue:
This machine was not dropped or damaged in any manner to cause this. Last couple of weeks when I open the LCD lid past 90 degrees upright, the LCD screen letters of words turn fuzzy and page colors change.
For example, if I push gently back on the LCD lid of my right now as I type here on this forum page, the white background of this web page turns 2 shades of pink with what looks like large square-like pink pixels. When I let up on the pressure, and the screen returns forward to 85 degress upright, the LCD screen colors of this web page go back to normal -- white is white and the image is sharp.
It is the entire page -- no pressure spots or issue limited to around the edges, its the whole screen that is affected.
LCD going bad or something else? This is definitely related to the angle of the lid and the issue is both position and pressure sensitive.
Can someone please help us please?

If it's during rotation of the screen after a certain point as you indicated, I would guess that the ribbon cable thru the hinge is getting tugged against something.
To determine if it at the hinge, before or in the screen bottom requires removal of the screen bezel and the lower bezel of the laptop (above the KB), possibly even the KB to visually check, depending on the model and routing of the cable to its video connection.
If you're up to dissassembly and inspection however, is dependant on your skillset, etc. -
What would cause the ribbon cable to suddenly become taut to the point it affects the display? What would cause it to suddenly catch on something inside the machine? -

Still having this issue, and asking for some guidance -- could this be a bad LCD? How do you knwo when a LCD is bad? -
Couldn't tell you the exact cause ... That was just my gut reaction based upon what you posted as the symptoms.
Basically, if you are not up to taking apart your laptop (and no one is forcing you believe me!) I would say you need to either:
Take it to someone locally.
Send it in to HP (depending on warranty, if you're out, go local IMO ...)
It could still be a bad LCD, but the fact that you state it happens on rotation leads me to believe something is caught and affecting the connection.
Please don't take this the wrong way, but if you keep "playing with it" to determine at what angle the issue occurs, you may be making it worse ...
It really needs to be looked at at this point, anything else that I or anyone else on the forum would only be speculative. -
My dv5t just started having a very similar problem recently.
When I pull the lid towards me - as if I was going to close it - a black band flickers only near the top of the screen. Maybe an inch thick. But this only occurs when I am moving the lid. So lately I have been just trying to not move the lid much. I assume a wire is loose or getting bent somehow - of course my warranty ended about 2 weeks before this happened! -
I posted my experience yesterday ("HP: good customer service, finally").
According to your description I am tempted to believe that there is a video cable pinched by an hinge.
I hope that HP will assist you in solving this annoying issue to your complete satisfaction.
Good luck -
I have recently been having problems with my dv9700 (long story won't go into it here). One of the things I am doing is replacing the screen as I just got my new screen today. To get to my old screen I followed the instructions here: http://www.screentekinc.com/lcd-removal-instructions.shtml.
It really wasn't as difficult as I though it would be, just be very careful at each step. Once you get the outside frame off and unscrew the screen from the metal brackets you will have access to the ribbon cable behind the screen as well as the inverter. I would check all of the connections and make sure nothing has been twisted or caught in something.
Otherwise, you'll need to have HP take a look at it if you have purchased accidental warranty, if not, you'll need to take it to a repair shop.
Good luck and I hope you can get this rectified ASAP!
