I just received my dv9700t as an upgrade to my zd8000 and I have to say I am not impressed.

The right shift key is all super small and the 8600m gs is supposed to be like 2x faster than my old ATI x600, but I notice nothing. Good thing it only cost me $80 or I’d be really mad.

    Maybe it's just v64 vs XP32

You should do a clean install, you'll definitely notice a huge difference. There is a thread at the top of the HP section here that will walk you through doing a clean install.

Yes, please take a look at the setup guide. If you want your boot time to become much faster. Turn off the UAC as descibed in the guide.

As per the guide I Turned off UAC and Deleted Norton and replaced it with Trend Mico Antivirus.

My boot time went from 4 Minutes, yes 4 minutes or more now down to a little over 11 seconds from power press to desktop and network connection.
Amazing. This is about 6 Times faster then my XPSP2 3Ghz dell.

Than there are Driver signing issues. ( I had to get some new Winradio drives that will run under 64bit Vista.) Yes, I am impressed with Vista. Or maybe we should call the OS Vista Minus :D. Becuae you have to turn off some features to get it smokin.

    Good Luck

I'd say if you just bought the PC and don't like the way it works with Vista. Exchange it for something else.

The shift key thing is a huge blunder as well. I don't know why they keep coming out with a new system with this ridiculous key on it (actually I do. because it would require them to redesign the entire case and keyboard to make it fit correctly.)

Wow I never noticed the smaller shift key on the right side. The left side is fine, which is what I use anyway. I don't think I've ever used the one on the right before. It is pretty small.

Hey roboMonkey, what's the resolution of the screen for your notebook? Did you get the standard 1440x900 or the 1680x1080?

Check HP's web site for pictures of the model you are interested in. You can see the keyboard in most of the pictures, then decide for yourself.

Okay I can see the performance diff now howerver the dv9700t does run all around slower than my dv9500t I think its the graphics card. its only getting a 4.8 windows exp score while my 9500 got a 5.0 and it plays Crysis like crap.

same card 8600 gs 256 vs 512. I think I'm going to send it back and get a Sager.

If you are looking for a laptop that you can play newer games on HP isn't the brand to go with. If you really want to game and still use the laptop for regular everyday use I would go with the Sager. Not only do they have better graphics cards, but their laptops are built for gaming as well. Because in all honesty the 8600m GS can't handle that much and HP was stupid to not at least put the GT model in. I know they had to think about heat, voltage, and space issues, but if other manufacturer's can fit it in their laptop HP can too.

Also, while you still have your laptop, have you tried using the modded drivers for your video card? I can't remember the website, but they mentioned them in this forum somewhere. I'll search for it and post again with the URL.

Are you sure you don't have the power profile set to battery saver or something like that? You really should be seeing no differences, as long as all of the settings are the same.

I tried the laptopvideo2go drivers no diff and I set my driver profile to high performance and in my power profile its set to high performance as well.

It just weird. it takes 13 seconds in Crysis to bring up my menu when I hit "C" or the "Esc" key and I have to run it a low settings. Now I just need to figure out if I care about dx10 for my Sager.

Either way you go roboMonkey you will be able to run games in DX10. If I were you though I'd definitely go with the 8800 GTX card though. If you don't have the money though the 8700m GT will still get the job done, but you'll have to lower the settings. I'd say if you have the money go for the 8800m GTX.
