    Hi,

I've had my HP dv9700t laptop for exactly a week now, and the screen won't start anymore. I'm dual booting Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit (vanilla install) and Kubuntu Linux. When I was running Kubuntu, the screen froze up, and I couldn't restart X. So I hard-rebooted, and now the screen won't start up. I know that the laptop is on because the keyboard lights come on, but nothing shows up on the screen - it is completely dark. Any ideas? I don't want to call HP support unless I have to.

    Thanks!

You have the problem only on Linux?

Try using a secondary monitor to see if it's the laptop's monitor OR something else...

As for HP total care tech support, DO NOT GET ME STARTED, PLEASE GOD!!!

I've owned like, 10ish notebooks from HP in the past 6 months, and each one has had like 10 problems? One of them had to be reformatted cause of their stupidity, another one has to be SENT IN cause it keeps giving me a BSOD, and to make things worse, they sent the REPAIR BOX to 111 1 street in WISCONSIN, when I live in BRITISH COLUMBIA CANADA?!?! NOW my OTHER laptop has problems with the webcam (and has had these for months) so they finally decided to have my serviced too (which means yet again loss of all my data). I said no screw you guys. Now a case manager is gonna call me and they're gonna compensate me for this bs that they've pulled.

Lol sorry i got off on a tangent there!

well there is a known issue with the webcam and if you search the forums you will find a fix for the intermittent webcam issue.

I agree with unknowntt regarding the external monitor. Plug in a second monitor to the VGA port and see what happens.

    John B:
I use Windows very little, so I haven't seen the error in that OS.

    unknowntt:
Yeah, I was thinking about doing that. I'll do that the next time I have the issue. I could also try SSH'ing into the laptop from another computer on the LAN, I guess.

    caveman:
The webcam seems to be working fine (it actually worked automatically in Linux - no configuration). I don't use it much though.

    bustanut456:
Yeah, that's what I did, and everything seems to be peachy now. However, is this a common problem with HP laptops? Are there going to be frequent hardware issues?

Oh yeah and as for the webcam fix, I KNOW it can be fixed :D but I want to give HP a hard time and get something outta them before I fix it :D

What exactly is wrong with the webcam? I'd like to check if mine has the same issue.

I experienced something like it too on my dv9500. Intermittent booting problem where it gets stuck after all drivers loaded, but before windows graphics comes up (the vista circle cartoon and music). I'm not sure if it's because of the beta nVidia drivers I installed.

It hasn't really bothered me yet because I generally keep the computer in sleep mode when not in use.

I just had this problem... your video card might be fried and the motherboard will have to be replaced.

Are you serious or trolling? I just played Portal for an hour and it looked great. There have been no problems since.

No, your original post was quite misleading:
That statement leads one to believe that your screen no longer works. From reading more, it seems that your screen stopped working ONCE. "Anymore" means "it stopped working and never started working again".

So no, it's not a troll, it's a possible result of the problem you described, even if you described a problem you're not having.

Ok, sorry for the misunderstanding. It just seemed pretty unrealistic to me at the time.

This happened to me once more - the laptop stopped accepting any input from the trackpad or keyboard. I turned it off, and when I turned it back on, the screen wouldn't load. So I turned it off, took out the battery, waited a while, and it worked again. If it becomes a regular problem, I guess I'll call HP.

I'd say it's already a regular problem. How long have you had the laptop? If it's less than 21 days, RETURN IT NOW!!! You have 21 days to return, no questions asked. After that, you will need to deal with warranty service which will take much longer.

Do not put up with poor quality products!!!
