it's now official... you can in fact put in a high res screen in a 9700 series laptop. just thought i would let the notebook community know this.....
-
That's weird, because after reading your post I went on HP's website and it still isn't an option when you customize a 9700. Perhaps they created that pre-configured model already, but haven't made it an option on the customizable laptops yet.
-
i never said through hp...lol.
-
If this is indeed the case, then let's hope that HP continues the trend by putting in 1680x1050 (WSXGA+) screens in the the dv6700 series.
-
sorry for the misunderstanding.
i upgraded my screen from a 1440 x 900 to a 1920 x 1200 -
Okay- then the question becomes, where did you source the replacement screen from, and is it a glossy or matte finish? What about cost?
-
1: screen is glossy and bright!
2: screen is an LG-Phillips
3: cost was about $375 because i didnt want to wait 3 days for it to come
4: no dark corners and can view screen from all angles
5: havent done any real game testing yet, but it seems that call of duty 4 is slightly jittery at 1920 res, but looks very nice...will have to investigate further on that. -
I'm surprised that a 8600M GS can handle a game like that at WUXGA resolution.
Btw, to the OP your resolution in your siggy is WUXGA, not WUXGA+. -
that better.
-
Where did you get the screen from?
-
Which LG screen did you get? ( I know 1920X1200) for which laptop?

was the swapout pretty straightforward? any tips?
-
yes, it was pretty easy. 5 screws on the front bezel.
lift it off the back bezel.
i think it's 7 screws for the screen itself.
unplug the video cable.
unplug the inverter.
and that's it.... -
LP171WU3 (TL)(A3)
Is the correct model -
So what screen would i want to get if i wanted to do the same thing for a dv6700?
-
so the screen you bought plugged right into the stock inverter and all the mounting points lined up and such?
-
that would be correct.
i did nothing fancy and i did not have to change inverter or video connector. all plug and play. and a newbie can do it all in under 30 minutes. i took a little longer because i wanted to test it out first, before seating in the bezel. but after all my testing and it worked, i switched out my 1440 for the 1920. -
can you take a pic of it?
-
I would appreciate a pic as well. I've got a few dead pixels on my dv9700t CTO's WSXGA+ (1680x1050), and I might just replace it with a WUXGA screen instead of sending the laptop in to HP to be fixed. One question though - would an 8400M GS work with this screen? I don't intend to game much or anything, just use some modeling software every now and then.
-
i do have a few pics and i will post them when i get home.
-
this is a real good question... i was told that it would not work with an 8600m gs, but i talked with them and they said i could send it backif it didn't work, but would have to pay a restocking fee. Thats why i did the extra testing before posting that it worked. Now the 86 and the 84 should have the same video cable, but you would probally have to take it apart and snap a picture of it, so we can compare.
-
-
srunni- I have a GeForce Go 6150 in my Dell Inspiron 9300 that's powering a WUXGA screen, so I think your worry that an 8400M would have issues trying to power a WUXGA screen would be unnecessary.
If you're up for the swap, I'd think your card is more than up to the task... -
wow!!!! i though 1680 x 1050 was good resolution
-
-
cool, glad we have a second opinion. (on 8400m gs) so now you have it
-
-
. I know my 20.1" external monitor "only" does 1680x1050, and it still doesn't feel like there's enough room to work with, especially when compared to my 1920x1200 15.4" internal display on my nw8440 (though things are easier to read and look better on the external). Yes, I have good enough eyesight to be able to read text that small on my screen
.
But all this screen modding is very interesting! I had no idea that you could do such mods to a laptop. Considering that the part is available, why can't HP provide it as a factory option on the dv9700 then?? It wouldn't be too hard for then to do.... -
That's the way how to make you purchase a top-line laptop if you want bigger resolution. Otherwise, business models will stay on shelves...
-
-
yep, was going to say the same thing srunni
-
Thanks for all the pics! I'll see about getting one of these. One other question - would this void my warranty with HP?
-
no problem!
now that's a good question.... me, im keeping all my switched out parts, just incase i need to switch it back for warranty purposes.
now if the new part has a problem, well it has it's own warranty, so you would just take it back out and send it in for repair or exchange.
(do not ebay spare parts! keep them) you never know when u might need to put them back. and with this dv9700...it is fairly easy to take apart and put back together after the first time....
and i almost forgot..allot of the time, hp will allow you to just send the defective part for a new replacement part as well...something else to keep in mind for the notebook guru.... -
My screen is on the way. I will let you guys know upon arrival in 1-2 days. Will put it straight away.
-
nice!
another dv9700 on the 1920 track....wooohooo!! -
Ok, so I am looking into doing this monitor upgrade on my dv6700 CTO. I was looking on the SmartMicroUSA.com website, under the LG section and "LP154W02". There are a bunch of WSXGA+ screen, however there are a bunch of different models, whats the difference between them? Only a couple of them are listed as glossy, does that mean the other monitors are matte?
http://h20181.www2.hp.com/plmcontent/NACSC/SML/
Another question I have about the actual install, if you look at the link above and navigate to the dv6500, Notebooks & Table PC -> HP Pavilion Notebook PCs -> HP Pavilion dv6500 PC Series, and then click on "FRU Remove/Replace", it shows a bunch of videos here. Did you pretty much follow the instructions for Display Bezel and instead of replacing the Bezel you actually replace the monitor? -
-
and as far as my screen...my original screen was an auo-optronics. so i talked with the techs at smartmicro who in turn said that the closes match would be the lg-philips, but they did not know at all if the video cable would support the resolution. so i took my chances and it worked. -
-
-
hummm, do like i use to do....take the hard drive out. they dont need your drive to install a screen.
and i would call and say your comp is at an authorized hp repair shop and you wanted to know if your could send them your screen, with your laptop warranty info and see what they say.
