On Pavillion laptops are the eSata ports powered? I ask because I want to get this Seagate external HDD, and you can purchase a eSata cable for it, however, because it is a 2.5" portable unit (aka no power adapter) the eSata port must be powered.

    Any idea?

eSATA is unpowered. However, the eSATA combo port is both eSATA and USB which provides the power via USB.

It requires a special eSATA/USB combined cable.

An example can be found here; e-SATA+USB Combined to eSATA+MINI B USB 5 pin cable NEW - eBay (item 320529791125 end time Dec-05-10 10:02:57 PST)

    or

eSATA+USB Combined Cable to an eSATA Male and USB Mini - eBay (item 290371310623 end time Dec-12-10 09:03:54 PST)

or for devices that have an eSATA/USB combined port:

    combo plug ESATA+USB to ESATA+USB extension cable,1m - eBay (item 110606133846 end time Dec-01-10 08:32:13 PST)

Hmmm Amazon says in the product description for the cable that it is "Powered by eSATA/USB combo port, no external power required" so sounds like it is good to go.

As long as it comes with an eSATA/USB combo cable, then you're good to go.
