i'm in the same boat as you, but thankfully you have 21 days from when you receive it to RMA so if a gen 3 is coming out soon you'll have time to return it.. im kinda upset because i would rather have the i5 which wasn't an option when i ordered it.

Edit also they dropped the i5 processor at the start of the month so it could just be a shortages.

they might change it now or you might have to wait it really depends on how close is it to shipping. they will probably offer you money to stay with the i7.

my wife just received one with the wrong screen, so... I suppose we can send it back on the very last possible day and perhaps get a gen3 replacement? most likely they would just swap out the screen, I imagine.

it was purchased with 30% off bing cashback

They might choose to do it as a repair rather than an exchange. Where's everybody getting the impression that they're going to be moving to a 3rd generation of the Envy 15?

yeah thats my question too why does everything think this if because the gen 3 is coming out, and not just a shortage on the i7 or something like that?

When HP has had shortages of something in the past, they just delayed shipments and build dates.

It's a complete mystery to me why they took away the i5 and now they have taken away the i7.

HP has been kicking around the Envy 15-1200 CTO service manual for several months now, it's about time for them launch the thing. if the most recent version is accurate; however, there would be no backlit keyboard and the only difference is the option to order i7-740, i7-840 and a couple more i5 processors that you couldn't order before, as well as a possible ATI 5730 GPU option.

so its nothing really worth worrying about not getting anyway, different processors and a downgraded GPU option

I'm hoping this is the case, and they launch it soon. It would solve my whole replacement problem with them. Ah well, nothing to do but wait and see.

I was thinking about getting an Envy 15 with the specs listed in your signature. Have you had any problems with overheating?

I have a similar system. No problems with heat after BIOS update to F.2A and a clean install. Just FYI though, the battery life is 1:45 MAX with the 6 cell.

Remember the 4th of July sale they had? It was for "all i5 laptops". So they take away the i5 so they can still say "all i5's are on sale", then when the sale is over, they bring it back.

Now why when they brought it back they didn't leave the option for an i7, your guess is as good as mine.

So you can read into this as much as you want. It looks like new specs are coming to the Envy 15. I asked in a convoluted way if a new version of the E15 was coming or if the i7 option will be back soon, and this was the response from the sale rep.

With the i7 820qm, it's 1:30-1:45 with wifi on, bluetooth off, fairly strict power rules, and a mixture of browsing and running a few applications (itunes, office, etc.). I haven't done any hardcore gaming or movie watching but I suspect it will be an hour (optimistically speaking) of battery life in those situations.

When I decided to buy the i7 Envy, I was looking for a desktop replacement with [semi]-ultraportable qualities and this is what I got. The ONLY drawback is the battery life but as a college student I'm near a wall outlet 80% of the time (and I have an extra 6 cell) so I've never encountered depletion issues.

The i7 options are back and it does not seem to be the gen3 model.

the only change I have noticed is that if you order an i5, it is impossible to order more than 4GB RAM, as the 8GB option uses 2GB sticks in each of the 4 DIMM slots (which are only available on the i7). I think before it was possible to order an i5 with 8GB RAM.
