Yes. ESPECIALLY something as small and light as the Envy 15.

If you're not planning on carrying the unit with you - ever - just get a desktop. Upgrades are much easier and you get better specs for whatever amount you want to spend.

Notebooks, even the 17", 10lb+ "desktop replacements," exist for people that need to be portable. Even if it's just because you'll be moving the computer once or twice a month, we all pay the premium just for the portability. If the unit is going to stay put for months or years on end, a desktop makes a lot more sense.

My solution to these questions is usually to buy both, as laptops and desktops serve two separate needs for me.

Maybe I just like blowing money on new toys though.

unless you have a need to be mobile, desktops are a far better deal and upgrades will only widen the gap.

I think this is the first thing that needs to be answered. I myself was contemplating this problem and opted for the envy because I wanted mobility. Hands down you can get greater gaming performance from a desktop but again i believe the envy is able to perform the tasks I need while still being mobile.

I carry my 17" DV9000 regularly. It isn't too heavy. But IMO if you won't carry it around much get a desktop, nothing beats the flexibility.

If you want it a little portable you could opt for a micro-ATX build, though i've never liked those. A regular tower case doesn't look out of place at all next to my 21" Trinitron monitor. :p
