Is the touch pad on the laptop a bit over the panel surface on the top and side????
I realized that mine touchpad is bit over the surface on the top and side but perfectly fine on the bottom the buttons are. Is it on purpose or just mine?

I have envy 17 and the touchpad is the same as you describe it. If I remember correctly others in the envy 17 owner's lounge have reported the same with their touchpads as well.

My 17 3D touchpad is a tiny micro bit over the surface on the top and a little more (compared to top) under the surface on the bottom.
