    Hello to all.

I have an Envy 17 custom-made Laptop, with Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit, i7 Q840, 8GB ram, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850, blu ray, 2x1TB Toshiba HDDs, bought in August 2010.
On December 2010 the machine stopped working properly and in HP Greece found out that the motherboard, ATI card and the hard drive of C were destroyed (did not tell me how) and they were repalced in the warranty at 0 cost to me. Fresh installation of Windows and literally new machine.
Ever since, the envy was working perfectly, up to about a week ago. Note that I am using it propely, hard but not excausting. I mean it is my everyday computer, and occasionally I play games (Wolfenstein 2009, CoD Black Ops), and connect it through HDMI to my TV for movies.
A week ago the screen started flickering to the extemd that I could not work. The same happened in January when I was told that the ATI was burned and replaced. Next day I started the computer and worked fine without any problem. I checked in the web and found out that other people have the same problem with me occasionally but did not give any solid solution. Others say it is the Hardware acceleration, or the BIOs etc.

Does any ENVY-brother here have any idea what to do?
Unfortunatelly I am working in Egypt where HP is not dully represented and my experience with them is quite dissapointing, but I have very capable ITs working with me so any suggestion is more than welcome for implementation. The machine is working fine now, but the flickering will return statistically.

Thanks and all the best to all.
    Manos.

I have this problem too and I was suspecting a crappy and overly long HDMI cable though other computers seem to be ok with the same cable. I went into the catalyst control center and checked "enable ITC processing" on the display in question and I have not seen it flicker like that again. The setting itself has to do with letting the display decide how to handle picture quality instead of letting the card resolve it so I guess that sorta makes sense? I have heard that this laptop doesn't have good hdmi drive strength but I forget where I saw that. anyhow I only had this issue with maybe 1/4 of the displays i tried it on so i imagine some people would never notice if they don't use it much.

It turns out I was mistaken about this option and the problem showed up again later. I did a bunch more tests with a bunch of HDMI cables and display modes but ultimately the problem did not go away. I sent an email to the special tech support email cto-esc.hpshopping2 at hp.com and they sent me a box and shipping label to send it in to a service center. I got it back less than a week later with a replaced motherboard and heatsink fan and it now no longer has the problem and the HDMI seems to be rock solid.
