your notebook should come with a year warrenty which covers defects. If your computer is defective the problem will show its self soon after you recive it, if all the parts last a year then they will last long after that. As far as extended warrenties go there is a lot of debate, I got accidental damage coverage for my notebook for 2 reasons, I carry it to school a lot. I also can't afford to replace any expensive parts like LCD's if I break them. If your someone who will leave it home or could afford to pay for a mistake like droping it by chance it might not make sense for you. I think HP/Compaq warrenty is a mail in service with decent turn a round time, like its out and back with in a week. Someone help me with this, I haven't had my serviced thankfully.

A lot of poeple say that "if the problem doesn't happen within X number of months, then you're fine". Well, I must completely disagree with what most people say. I have seen first hand that an extended warranty is an option that should definiately be purchased with a notebook. If you have the money to get a new notebook asfter the standard 1 year warranty or don't plan to keep it after 1 year, then don't bother. But how many people out there change units every year or have that much money to drop on a new notebook every so often? I got 2 Toshiba notebooks, one for myself and one for my brothers GF, both with a 2 year extended warranty (3yrs total). nothing went wrong the 1st year, but into the 2nd & 3rd years, it needed a replacement of the keyboard a few times, a modem harness, LCD and systemboard. Everything except for the LCD was on 1 unit. The cost to repair all these things out of warranty would have been approx $800-$1000CDN (approx $600-$800US). That's not including the cost of the LCD on the other unit, which would have pushed it to approx $1600CDN (approx $1250US) for all repairs. So to think back, paying an extra $100-$200 for an extra few years coverage was completely worth the money.

Since you're considering getting an HP/Compaq notebook, I'd recommend getting the manufacturers extended warranty either at the time of purchase. You have upto 11 months from the date of purchase to get the extended warranty, but I wouldn't wait too long. If you're buying from Best Buy or some other shop, you may want to look at their plans carefully. Usually dealing with warranties supplied by the store rather than a manufacturer's warranty may have "conditions" that have to be met before they will service.

I bought the 3 year extended warranty from HP which included the accidental spill or drop coverage.

My Pavillion N5495 ran great for a year and a half when the battery died. Called HP and guess what, everything but the battery was covered on the extended warranty?

Shortly before the warranty expired, the cable coming out of the power supply went bad and I wanted a replacement / repair. HP claimed that they had no record of my warranty and the packaage # I told them supposedly never excisted. I was working long hours and didn't have any further time to persue it. I just cut the cable and soldered ther wires and it worked.

Just after the warranty expired, the HD went south. I replaced it and once I had it all restored, the LCD cuts out. You can see the screen really faint in the back, like somebody turned the light off. I guess I'm in for a new one.

The new one will have extended warranty even though the one I have lasted for 3 years without any major problems. I work all over and people come in the office with their coffee cups and what ever else.
If they spill it you're out of luck and I'm sure not all of them are willing (even though they should) to pay for the repairs or replacement.

They have different packages. You have to carefully read through them and choose the one that fits your needs and pocket book.
