    lets say if i get a hp with a 1400x900 res on the laptop monitor. if i slave it out to an external monitor, will i be able to get a better res? or is that 1400x900 res locked in no matter what?

    Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't that depend more on the graphics card and the monitor?

    well i have a dv6000 and intergrated graphics and i run a external 22' at 1680x1050 and the laptop screen is 1280x800

    You'll probably just have to configure your external monitor in your graphics control panel.
