hey all, i just bought a dv6500 special edition HP and it's my first night home with. it's the one with the AMD processor, not the intel one. but one thing i've noticed right away is how frequently the fan comes on. it comes on about every minute!!!

is this something that's specific to this model, or would it be because of the AMD processor?

i have to admit, it's driving me nuts. :(

what do you think it is?

just a thought, but would RAM have anything to do with this? the machine on came with one GB of RAM and it was supposed to have 2GB.

    thoughts anyone?

Do a search on FAN. You will find this happens to every model. There are ways to reduce the CPU either through Vista or RMClock that helps but it still comes on. I am getting used to it as annoying as it can be. It is nothing wrong with your laptop.

AMD's seem to be more hotter than Intel's and thats why your fan is on and off, on and off a lot.
It is perfectly normal for it to do that.
It is not software regulated, once the CPU gets to the certain degree in temperature, the fan kicks in until its cool enough.
Try undervolting to reduce heat with RMClock or NHC.
More ram would make your system faster and possibly make you HDD a tiny bit cooler, but it is not related to the the fan/heatsink/cpu.

thanks for the help mickey. i've searched all over this forum for "fan" already actually and done quite a bit of reading already.

when you say this happens to every model, do you mean every model of HP or every model period? i have a dell XPS M140 that has a very quiet fan...which i really like now compared to the sounds of this one!

    thanks for the reply allan.

so, are you two having this frequent fan thing, too? i can't imagine myself getting used to it.

i'm sitting right next to my boyfriend who's using an hp dv9000 series and his is whisper quiet, but it cost a lot more than mine and is running better specs overall. intel, too.

Sorry - since you were in the HP forum I assumed HP. I have a DV6567 and a DV9000 series(wifes now and I can't remember the exact model). Both have fan issues. The 9000 series runs much warmer too with the 2 HDs. Mine, th 6567 runs cooler but doesn't stop the fans from spinning when they want to.

I run RMclock and that helps but like I said, it doesn't bother me much anymore...or am I just losing my hearing :).

    yeah, i did mean HPs.

i suppose i could get used to it, it's just that right now it's driving me nuts. LOL i remember trying out another HP a few years ago with the same issue and i took it back.

my boyfriend's dv9000 series is so quiet! i guess i expected the same. :(

i'll look into those programs you recommended, but i don't want to overheat my laptop either.

i'm also considering selling this machine and getting a dell. a boring dell. i really do like this HP (it's beautiful), but the fan thing might drive me nuts.

There is a way to silence the fan without worrying about overheating. Click on battery. The profile should be on HP recommended. Then edit the profile (I think you need to click on advanced. Go to processor power management. Put the CPU setting to 5% min and 70 % max on both battery and ac. This will get rid of the fan noise. Problem solved.

well, i tried this and the fan comes on less frequently, but still often. about once every 2 mins. or so.

how about this: my real beef is how loud it is. is there a way to have it on more often, but have it be less loud? my dell xps m140 fan ran a lot, but it was really hard to hear. this ones comes on every now and again, but comes on aggressively.

    thoughts?

Try lowering your 70 to 50. This is equivalent to what the Power Saver option except that it shouldn't turn off the EYE CANDY as the HP setting does.

You are correct about the Dell. My work lappy is a D620 and the fan does run alot but it very seldom(if ever) goes into high speed which makes it very quiet. It is quite warm to the touch on the bottom as most other laptops are.

The constant fan noise could also be attributed to the BIOS version you have. Mine is F.22 so I hear it all the time - as soon as I turn my notebook on, the fans start spinning loud then they get quiet. I've heard that F.16 is a lot quieter from people who ordered HP's earlier than I had.

I don't have any problems with the noise since I listen to music and it drowns the noise of the fan. ;)

Callisot9 - yes - it seems very straight forward. It is a windows app that flashes the bios and the shuts down the system. When you come back up the BIOS is changed. I have been able to go forward and backwards.

Sodina - My 6500 came with either 07 or 09(can't remember) but never saw a .16. I don't think I saw what Laptop you have. I there is one out for the F.16 for my 9000 series.

Just go with the newer F22 bios. It reduced the fan noise quite a bit with my dv6500t. Its easy to install.. just make sure you have your notebook plugged into the wall and do not have any USB or any other devices connected when you flash it. Since its a windows exe it is fully automated. Its takes a bit of time so do not interrupt the process once it starts. If you do.. then you probably won't be able to boot it anymore and will have to send it in for repairs. Its fairly easy process but if you don't do the above, it can be devastating. F22 is available on HP web site.. please read all the instructions and precautions before installing. Just remember, if the F22 runs the fan more then the F16 there may be a good reason. Too much heat can damage hardware on these notebooks.

    1. make sure you don't have some process hogging the system resources. Watch out for programs such as P2P, firewall and other intensive jobs running in the background.

    2. get rmclock and undervolt your CPU. It helps a lot.
