I just got my laptop about a week ago. I noticed yesterday that the fan is always on-it wasn't before. Over the keyboard feels a little warm but mostly underneath (sort of close to where the battery is but mostly on the other side of the keyboard). I've been using it on a hard surface so I don't block the vents and such..

How warm is normal? I know you can download programs that can tell you the temp but I don't know where to find that. Is it a bad sign that the fan is always on now? Could it just be because it's summer and warm in general?

I have the HP DV5-1234se if it makes any difference..When I looked up reviews I didn't see any problems with overheating.

    Thanks. :)

All laptops will overheat under certain circumstances. Firstly, take the battery out when you are using the laptop on mains power. It will reduce the heat and prolong the battery's service life by over 60%. All laptop batteries that die within a few months die because the laptop runs on mains power for very long periods of time thus they are always kept at 100% charge, which is very very bad for them.

And i guess Google is banned in your area, otherwise i don't see how you weren't able to find any temp reporting programs. CoreTemp is a very good one. If your load temps (hint: IntelBurnTest) are under 85C there is no reason to worry. Also you can try undervolting the CPU, i believe RMClock will work with yours.

If you just got your laptop back from hp it is most likely that they updated your bios. The updated bios keeps the fan on all the time so theres no need to worry. Use hwmonitor as its the best temp program out. HEHE.

There's the chance to access the bios setup and disable the Fan Always On feature. At least my dv5 has this option.
