    Hi.

I searched the last year or so of posts and didn't see specifically my problem, although looks like lots of HPs have noise issues.

The last couple of months my fan (DV1000) makes a squealing/whining noise when it kicks in. Before this the fan just gently whirred. I don't recall any especially bad jolts or physical trauma to the laptop. The fan does kick in frequently, but if it were quiet I wouldn't mind.

What I noticed yesterday is that the noise actually gets softer if I turn down the volume of the computer (and then I only hear the whirr again).

Since I figure this changes the possible diagnoses, I throw out the question to yous guys to see in you have ideas for what it might be. The laptop is out of warranty (about 15 months old). I am fairly handy and could figure out how to self-service if it's not too hard (I replaced the screen of my cell phone, e.g.)

Thanks for any help you've got. I'm a little tired of the noise, and it makes the laptop annoying, say, for watching DVDs (since I need the volume up). I also want to prevent fan failure if that is likely to happen in the near future.
