    Hi,

I recently got the HP nx9010. I have not really been into games but decided to buy far cry and see what the fuss is about. One problem... i cant get the game to work! Does anyway know how to get far cry to work on the nx9010. I have changed my video card to 128MB, leaves 328MB RAM, I have loaded the latest drivers for the video card from the web. What else may need to be done?

When i go to play the game i can get the screen where to you have the option to install, uninstall, play etc. How ever when i pick play the window shuts down and nothing happens.

    Could someone please help?

I think the problem is related to your graphics card. It has to do with the fact that the ATI IPG chipset does not support DirectX 9.0. This game requires a DirectX 9.0 supported/compatible graphics chip. Here's the link to UBISoft's supported graphics card list.

    http://ubisoft.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/ubisoft.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=9045

I believe the game will not play on your system because the chipset only supports upto DirectX 8.x.

will the ATI Radeon 9200 Mobility 64 MB work? The supported list doesn't say anything about this card. And how do I verify which Catalysy version I have?

A simple way to test if it would work without buying it would be to download one of the many demos and try playing it.

I could be wrong on this, but I believe the only ATI Mobility chipsets that are DirectX 9 compliant are the 96xx series & up as well as the Mobility Fire GL T2. Here's the link to the ATI Canada website with all the available Mobility Chipsets.

    http://www.atitech.ca/products/mobile.html

The ATI Mobility 9200 chipset only supports upto DirectX 8.1. But Quikster is correct, the best thing to do is to try the Demo's available for free and see if they work, otherwise base it on what the ATI website indicates.

I think to findout the Catalyst version, goto the Display Properties --> Settings --> Advanced Button --> Options Tab. In Windows 98 that I run on my Desktop (stop laughing) it's located there, mine says the version is 04.2, I assume it's v4.2. Should be the same under WinXP.

While instaling Call Of Duty on my zx5040us, I got a promt to install DirectX 9.0, I have the ATI 9200 64mb dedicated chip.

It downloaded and installed with no problems and the game plays fine.

Here is a page that is in my documents about DX 9.0.

    **********************************************************************

    DirectX® 9.0b

During the Call of Duty setup, the install process will prompt you to install Microsoft® DirectX® on your computer. If you choose "Yes," the Microsoft DirectX setup program will install the appropriate files on your computer.

Please refer to the DirectX website for further information or localization updates. http://www.microsoft.com/directx

    Q. What is DirectX 9.0b and why do I need it?

    A. DirectX 9.0b is a set of sound, video, input and network functions developed by Microsoft. Call of Duty utilizes the functions that are included with DirectX 9.0b.

    Q. If I don’t install DirectX 9.0b when I install the game, can I install it later?

    A. Yes. You will need to manually install it. To do so, use the following instructions:

    1. Place Disc 1 in the CD-ROM drive. The Launch screen should appear. (See AutoPlay if it does not appear.)
    2. Click on the "Extras" button.
    3. Click on "Install DirectX" and follow the installation process. When DirectX installation finishes, you will need to restart your computer for the new drivers to work.

    Q. I already have other Windows 98/98SE/2000/ME/XP games installed on my computer. Will the Microsoft DirectX Installer change my DirectX files?

    A. If you already have other Windows 98/98SE/2000/ME/XP games on your computer, chances are you already have a version of DirectX installed. In this case, the Microsoft installer will detect and overwrite any previous versions with DirectX 9.0b. At that point, you will need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect. If, however, you already have DirectX 9.0b installed on your computer, the Microsoft DirectX 9.0b installer will detect it and not overwrite any files. You will not need to restart your computer after installation in order to run Call of Duty.

    **********************************************************************
So, the 9200 is compatable with DirectX 9.0 then, right?

I recently updated my Windows XP and it included the DirectX 9.0b update from mirosoft.com. It's called the "end-user runtime" update or something like that. Thing is that it apparently installed the whole DirectX 9.0, but I don't know how to find it on my computer. I don't know whether it just updated the driver, or it installed the newer Direct X9.0 version (I think i had 8.1 before). How can i check where the Direct X 9.0 file is? And how do I know whether it supports my videocard (ATI 9200 mobility 64mb)?

a great built in utility for DirectX is called "dxdiag.exe" just type that or "dxdiag" into a run box and it will pop up. That program is a diagnostic for the directx interface. It includes the version information as well.

The directX from microsoft is just the software part. FarCry also requires a video card that has full hardware support for dX9. I just looked at ATI's website www.ati.com and only the 9600 & 9700 mobility cards support directX 9 in the hardware.

If the game says requires directX 9 graphics card you are required though.

Ah yes I love the AIW cards, although mine is a bit newer they have always made great multi-purpose cards (ATI 9600 PRO AIW).

[ :D] Yeah, the AIW cards are great, but with my original design, I'm considering getting a more powerful card. An ATI 9600+ should do me just fine. Just like on the notebooks, I'm gonna hold off on getting my replacement unit unless they have minimum an ATI Mobility 9600 chipset with at least 64MB dedicated memory. Otherwise, I'm gonna have issues like Brucelee with FarCry.

I am currently running a Compaq R3050US with the ATi Radeon 9200 with 64Mb Dedicated ram...farcry works like a champ as long as you use it with all the graphic settings at "LOW".

Even on desktop systems FarCry may have some lag...after all...recommended requirements put Video at a 128Mb DX9 card such as the ATi 9500 to 9800 and FX series cards. As lead tech for a local PC shop I constantly have people coming to us with their machines trying to find out why a game or program won't work when their machines meet the "minimum" system requirements. Remember, while the developers may have managed to get the game to work on one of their minimum requirement machines but the chances that you will be able to do the same, and keep it enjoyable, are slim.
