It all comes down to screen size and weight. If a little extra weight doesn't bother you I'd get the dv6000. If you get the dv2000 be sure to get the GeForce 7200 GPU option, Intel's GMA series GPU is awful, or get the dv2000z that has nVidia's GeForce 6150 (not as good as the 7200 but at least it's not Intel).

You want a DVD-RW drive. They shouldn't even bother offering anything else.

If you are going to be carrying it around campus a lot, you will probably be better off with the dv2000t. Since you're not going to be playing many games I think that it is your best choice.

    Hey,

I actually just returned my dv6000t, and I'm awaiting on my new dv2000t. Let me start off by saying they are essentially the same computer. I returned the 6000 only because after using it for a couple weeks, I realized I wanted something a little more portable. If you're on the go with your notebook either regularly or semi-regularly (like me), then I would definitely go with the 2000. Really the only thing the 6000 offers over the 2000 is a more powerful video card (GeForce 7400 vs GeForce 7200). I'm not a big gamer, so it doesn't make a difference to me.

I DID have some technical issues with my 6000. The battery seemed to have been defective and was not charging properly. If it weren't for the size issue though, I would have never returned the notebook, just gotten a new battery from HP.

Let me tell you, this series of notebooks are really impressive. The only other thing you'll want to watch out for is the screen. If you get brightview, the SEC screens seem to be the poorest option. My 6000 had an LG Phillips screen, and it was beautiful. I'm PRAYING for another good screen when my new notebook arrives.

I wouldn't bother. If you're NOT GAMING like he clearly indicates in the first post, why spend more money than you need to?

Hell, you could probably get by on the slower processor as well if you really want to save money with the tasks you're looking at.

wait... you got the APP discount, the 100 instant discount, AND the 15% off of anything over $1300 discount also?

btw, i'm also a student and i love the size and portability of the dv2000t. i think you'll enjoy it. personally, the 15.4 inch screens just overdo the portability by a margin. 12.1 or 13.3 inches seems a bit straining. 14 inches is perfect. it's all a preference.

At the very least he won't lose a chunk of system memory to the shared memory Intel GPU. Also, I'm very distrustful of the Intel GPU's ability to handle Vista Aero Glass regardless of what Intel claims.

Speaking of Vista, good choice on the C2D over the cheaper 32-bit-only CD, ideally I'd say get the 4MB L2 cache version but your processing needs don't sound all that high.

About the discounts: you can't stack the 15% discount on top of the other discounts like that. HP will give you the 15% discount instead of the $100 instant savings, assuming they'll let you have it at all in the academic discount program.

The APP discount and the $100 instant savings can't be combined with the 15% off coupon. When you go to the check-out screen the system will take the higher of the two; either the APP + $100 instant savings OR the 15% off coupon.

im keeping my fingers crossed for the 15% off coupon. i read it here in a forum somewhere... this guy used both APP and coupon but it also said that when he tried doing it again it didnt want to... i'll try really hard to look for it.

can I know, what do you mean "SEC screens"? I got my dv6000t, but no choice in the screen selection. I just selected the brightview. and there is no further choices base on brightview. what do you mean?

Hey saunter, HP doesn't give you the option to choose which screen manufacturer you want on your laptop. However, a lot of people in here noticed that some of the screens in the DV2000Ts were dimmer than others and after checking under 'device manager' on their laptops they came to the conclusion that the screens manufactured by Samsumg (SEC) were the bad screens (noticeable dimmer than the other manufacturers). That's why everybody try to stay away from those screens even though there is no way to do that. All you can do is wait until you received your laptop and hope that you didn't get an SEC screen.
I got an SEC screen on my laptop and decided to return it and re-order a new one. Hopefully this time I won't get an SEC screen.

yeah i reordered too and it should be arriving soon. keeping fingers crossed for a better screen.

also, i configured the same exact system i got before, but tried using the 15% off instead of going the APP & $100 off route. Turns out to be about the same price for me with a 2 year warrantee. also, it seems the 15% does not apply towards the extra warantee (sp?).

Go to 'Device Manager', click on 'Monitors', now right-click on the 'Plug and Play Monitor' and open 'Properties'. Under 'Properties' click on the 'Details' tab and you'll see a line like this:
    DISPLAY\SEC4242\5034570$098848&353453453

SEC = Samsumg = Dimm screen
QDS = Quanta = Nice and bright. These are supposed to be the best screens.
There is also AUO and LPL. These are also good screens.

    I got it! thank you!

mine is AUO, I think it is bright enough. And in fact it is so bright and looks beautiful, that always after watching the screen for a while, when you move to other things, I feel the air is a little white...
