hey guys quick question.. i just called hp to ask a couple of questions about the hp dv9500 and since i read in one of these threads that adding the fingerprint reader would take away a usb port then i went ahead and asked them. The guy had me on hold for a few minutes while he went and asked. His answer was "no", "you do not get a usb port less if getting the fingerprint reader, you still get 4 usb ports"....

Any comments? i know i read that you loose one somewhere in this forum.. maybe a dv9500 owner with fp reader can clear this up? how many usb ports do you have? do you have fp reader? this would be specific for the dv9500 model.

    thanks!

oh no you dont lose a usb port because of the Finger Print Reader :)

You lose one if you choose the Dedicated Graphics Option (8400 GS), which will give you 3 total.

EDIT: I only know about this with the dv2500 & dv6500, not the dv9500 sry

I have a 9500 with a fingerprint reader and you DO lose a USB port. You lose the one in the front right of the laptop as suland said.

well I have the DV2500t (the 14.1" version), and I have the fingerprint reader.
I didn't lose a usb port because of the fingerprint reader, but I did lose a usb port because of the 8400GS. The reason being they put in an HDMI port in place of the usb port when you order the 8400GS.

I have a 9500 with a FP reader, and my 4th USB port is blocked off.

    You only get 3.

I beleive the one that you lose is actually USBPort#1. FWIW, I have found on my DV9500T that the two right side ports (#1 and #2 ?) have much better thoughput than the two on the left side, and are accessaible to boot-time utilities like Ghost2003. Those utilities do not seem to find the two USB ports on the left side, leading me to believe that they are actually hubbed. IIRC, the motherboard supports up to 10 USB ports, and the webcam and bluetooth take two (the fingerprint reader makes three)

I wanted the fingerprint reader, however, I really needed the at leaast two USB ports that would be accessaible at boot time to Ghost2003 and a couple of ohther utils, (and I need really fast USB at Vista runtime) so I sadly skipped ordering it.

FWIW, the firewire port seems slow. My Addonics expresscard 34 firewire ports seems to runs circles around the built in port.

as seen in the pic, yes you do lose a port if you chose the fingerprint reader, that's stupid IMO

The more i learn about the new HP range the less I like. They seem to be nothing more than the old range with new parts. they havent sorted out any issues, they have just made things worse. the graphics card is just not up to par with similar choices and they have not improved anything exterior-wise including the hard drive heat issue

I believe that because the DV9500 is larger, you get an extra USB port beside the ExpressCard slot. For the DV6500 and DV2500, there's no USB port down there. So you lose the USB port if you go for the DV2500, 6500, or 9500 with fingerprint reader.
