ok, so i did a clean install of vista on my new DV5T and it worked out pretty well, with one thing being the problem: i cant get my fingerprint reader to work.
    here's what i've downloaded:

    AuthenTec Inc. AES2501 Fingerprint Driver
    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp37501-38000/sp37812.exe

DigitalPersona Fingerprint Software for Microsoft Windows Vista
    (64-bit)
    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp37501-38000/sp37932.exe

    and i've also downloaded these:
    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp39501-40000/sp39549.exe
    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp39501-40000/sp39552.exe

and to no avial...one thing i've noticed too, my device manager says that i'm missing some things:

any1 have any ideas? i'd really like to not have to revert back to the factory settings cause of all the bloatware...but not having a cool fingerprint reader kind of stinks. thanks in advance!

Did you save the swsetup folder? It had all the factory installed drivers. It was the first thing after making recovery disc that you should backup.

didnt make restore discs... didnt have any important data really... i just have the HP recovery partition... that's my backup if i cant get this to work/get frustrated...and then i'd go back to the offical HP setup of my computer.

I don't think you could access that HP recovery partition anymore after a clean install. The Master Boot Record(MBR) has been changed. I could be wrong since it is a dv5t. But in the dv9xxx/dv6xxx line you couldn't.

Of course you could hope someone with a dv5t to upload the file for you.

i'm thinking this was just an upgrade, but to the same version. all the old files i had are now in a windows.old folder... and it says my hp recovery partition still has 1.85 free of its 11.1gb allocated space... so i think it still works?

Have you tried pointing the unkown devices to the windows.old folder and seeing if Vista can find the drivers?

****.. it found the driver and installed itself as a personal identification device...

so i uninstalled that software and the supposed fingerprint driver from HP, and reinstalled them both.. and a few restarts later... nothing.
this makes no sense at this point. any other ideas?

yea they are... the other ones were JMB38X memory card controllers, for the memory stick slots on the left side of the laptop i'd imagine.

this is crazy that it STILL doesnt detect the fingerprint reader at all.

Does it have to be enabled or setup in the software? I never had a fingerprint reader, so I'm unsure how they work..........

i'm thinking that the device needs to be using the AuthenTec Inc. AES2501 Fingerprint Driver. so if i uninstall the device and the "validity sensor" driver, and try and install the AuthenTec one... it doesnt work. boggles my mind.

okay, uninstall all the drivers and software you have now. Then restart the laptop. See if there is a exclamation mark that you suspect is the fingerprint reader. Then, dont have windows look for and install a driver. download the driver off of the hp website and install that. Then restart, and it should now work at your windows login. Then install the digital persona software. If you are using x64 make sure that you are using the x64 driver and digital persona software for the reader.

****. well thanks borntooxlr8 for the help. still didn't work for some reason. even though it is the correct driver.

here's another problem. i cant restore my computer to the original HP factory settings even though i never touched the recovery partition. i installed an Upgrade version of vista 64 home premium onto my OS partition, and it shows that there's still all the data on the 11GB partition. any ideas?
