i personally think the v2000 looks 100% better than the hp version... however, if you're gonna get the dv, then i would suggest going thru's HP's education discount site... right now they have some pretty good add-ons like a free extra 6 cel battery as well as some other stuff

    good luck

700m would probably get you more lady attention. but... much like other interactions, it'll only be able to stay on for 2 hours.

The Gateway M210 has a 14 Inch WXGA, 80 Gb HD, 512 Megs of Ram, Dvd burner but it has only 4200 Rpm on the HD and speakers are on the bottom (WEAK). The price is $1269 plus 44 for s/h.

There are no reviews so I don't know its true battery life and performance.

I was having a tough choice is selecting a model. I am in a similar situation. I had it narrowed to the 700m, Gateway M210, Compaq V2000 and HP Dv1000. Compaq just went up $50 so this week, HP is cheaper. However, I want to configure it with a DVD burner to archive photos and MP3s. So IF I choose HP to stay in my target range, I will have to settle for a 1.6 Ghz with 4x DVD burner and a 40 gig HD/512 Mg RAM/Brightview.

The 700m is nice but I will pass on tonight's deadline for $500 off. With that discount I can only get the 1.6 ghz, 40 GB HD and DVD burner. I wanted at least 60 GB of HD space and an 8 Cell battery to get at least 5 h of use rather than 2.5 on the four cell.

the screen...is awsome in dell700m.. but the multimedia options as well as the dvd burner.. in the hp for 1100.. is an awsome deal...i went down to the mall.. to check the 700m .. dell booth.. man dell 700m is nice.. but kind of too small ... the speaker problem which every one were saying is there but ..i guess its small s.. would u give preference to screen or the nice speakers as well as other things..including a not bad screen..

I believe the speakers on the HP are irresistable. I haven't found speakers that sound that good on a PC of this price range or size for that matter. With the PCMCIA sized remote you can cuddle with the date of the week on the bed with the HP. I WONDER if they have taken care of that HD noise issue....

I saw the Dell 700 and thought it was OK, but due to incredibly poor treatment from Dell gave up on them. I bought a DV1000, and I'm really glad I did instead of the Dell.

Yes, they have definitely corrected any beeping problems with harddrive and BIOS clock problems. I have not seen either problem show up in my unit. The DV1000 seems sturdier and more solid than the Dell 700 (just my subjective opinion).

I upgraded to 512k memory, a 5400rpm harddrive, larger battery, and the bluetooth-enabled wireless card. The response time is fast, the harddrive is not noisy, the battery lasts really long, and the wireless card picks up my neighbor's wireless signal pretty well [ :p]

The screen is nice- compact enough but large enough. The speakers sound great. Be sure and opt for the little remote control, it's only a $15 option.

All this whining I've heard about it running too warm-- I don't see it. Not mine.

Yes, I think it's a great notebook for a college student. I couldn't swear to you that it's the best one out there, but if you bought it-- I'm pretty sure you'd be very happy with it. I sure am.

You could always get the 8 cell battery for the Dell 700m which should give you 4-5 hours of battery life. The 4 cell battery is just unacceptable.

I think now the DV1000 models have all the problems fixed except for the vertical screen viewing angle, but that doesn't bother me in the least. The Dell 700M's DVD burner can burn double layer DVD's but the DV1000's can't.
