My [fn] key seems to be broken. When I try to use the intergrated number pad using the fn key nothing happens. I have tried to use the fn key with other keys and it seems to sorta work but real sporatic. Any clues as to how to get the [fn] key to work?

Yeah num lock did the trick. I guess on the HP's or maybe any other computer you need to first put on num lock. I know on my old Toshiba you didn't need to do that. Oh well, one extra thing to push.

There has got to be a way to allow you to acess the numpad by only pressing and holding the Fn key.

No, the Numpad is only activated when the light above numlock is lit. This only happens by FN+Numlock. You may experiment, however, and try some keyboard remapping program. You cannot remap the FN key, though.

    hello all,
i have the same problem. Just got new barebone notebook(8446D) and found the Fn key need to be 'locked' to access number pad.
Strange feeling to have another left, right, up & down keys while Fn is presed, when you need numbers:/

is this up-to BIOS or I can try remap keys?
    Can anyone help?
its realy problematic working with Cubase :(

ps- sorry for mistakes. im not very good in english.

Sorry for necropost. I have the exact same wish... to have the "fn" key work as a shift key for the integrated numpad. My old laptop (Dell Inspiron 700m) had this functionality, but my new one (Lenovo t61p) does not. Having to press Fn+ScrLock to enable AND disable the numpad each time... is quite a hassle.

(I know neither of my computers in question is HP/Compaq, but it's the same basic issue.)

Maybe you can ask HP to include this feature in their next BIOS release?
