    i am keeping

    brightness at 48%
    digital vibrance at none
    contrast at 60%
    image sharpness at none
    gamma at 40%

but i somehow feel i am not getting the best quality possible.
what would be the best setting for everyday computer use?

Use a color correction program like Adobe Gamma.

Nvidia drivers also have a color correction utility built in to them. You might want to try those.

    I'm on a 8400gs . . .

    35% brightness
    0% digital vibrance
67% contrast (Pretty much max without blowing out whites for me)
    0% image sharpness
80% gamma (did an easy gamma correction and 80% was about ok . . .)
