i have the hp dv9640us and it has the 8600m gs confused because many websites states it has gddr3 or ddr2 depending on what the manufactar wants and rivatuner everest and pc wizard said i have ddr2 also.

    my question is
does any one know if it is gddr3 or ddr2 and if it is ddr2 can i fix it by a driver and something

i hope hp did not cheat not only me out but all of us hp customers lol

well, if everest tells you it´s ddr2 , then i guess that´s right. everest is quite reliable.

and you cannot make a software(driver) physically transform ddr2 ram into gddr3 ram.

DDR2 or 3 refers to the architecture of the RAM installed on the card, basically higher number usually means faster, more advanced and more expensive. So no, you cant fix it with a driver or any other software modifications. I would say it is DDR2 because that would make more sense since it can use system RAM to compensate for low graphics memory using NVIDIAs TurboCache feature but thats only a logical guess, dont know for certain.

They sold you a bit short on processor! Your system is equal to (RAM, chipset) or better than mine (graphics, memory) but my processor is a 1.8GHz dual core (And i'm running XP Lol). Pretty odd design theory!

i got mostly the same specs as you and i was also disappointed when I saw that it was just DDR2. I just used GPU-Z to look it up. But for $950 I got a good deal on this computer. So I am happy

lol, and that price is in Canadian dollars purchased in Canada, where we don't get those 30% off coupons and such. It was on sale at Future Shop here. Regular it was $1299 and was on sale for $949.99 and with tax it came to $1079. I tried looking around for other ones around this price point that had similar specs, but could not find any. Most other ones around this price point had intel x3100 graphics which could never play games like Age of Empires 3 on High, and Call of Duty 4 on 1440*900 and medium low graphics.

You know I think you should go ahead with that CPU upgrade. That really is the only thing holding you back. If you look on systemrequirementslab.com you can check to see what games require what hardware. I have the dv9640us and the only thing it fails on is the processor. The video card really is a good one granted its not the GT with 512mb running SLI in a laptop, but for the price its the best.

you do i change my hard drive and my ram recently and ill do more research to see if it is worth changing the cpu.
also ill see how the gpu is placed in and see if i can change it to a gt.(not top proity though)
