Just wanted to share the news: Forget the outdated HP drivers for ATI graphics in your HP laptops! Don't look for laptop drivers at AMD site , just download and install normal catalyst drivers. Maybe some admin should put this or other topic regarding this sticky ?
It definitely does not work on all and there has to be workarounds done before it becomes likely of a successful install. The sticky has pointed out both HP custom drivers and AMD reference drivers for the matter.
Brightness etc are just some of the associated problems that are likely to occur. Know you're trying to be helpful though.

Intel HD graphics driver with Hybrid graphics support
It uses a driver modified by HP or AMD for hybrid/switchable graphics support that
enables the laptop to run a secondary dedicated graphic card. Installing a Intel HD driver from Intel's websiteor other reference drivers would also mess up how switchable graphics and hyrbid graphics work because Intel HD drivers on Intel's side are only meant for PCs with standalone Intel HD graphics. It has NO switchable support. The only proprietary drivers that will work are supplied by HP's driver support site.
This hybrid supported Intel HD package will simply be uninstalled if you uninstall HP's custom CIM.
This package is unavailable on AMD's reference package. As always, install reference drivers at own risk & caution. It does guarantee it works on all systems. Hardware IDs in the installation whitelist are only part of the keys to the answer, they are not the absolute solution.
OK I saw the tread regarding hybrid/switchable graphics and perhaps this doesn't relate to that problem
but do you know/did you check that 13.1 does not work on all laptops with ati non-hybrid ? I am one of those that needed workarounds so far and now i don't have to
On switchable, specific systems will BSOD with this reference driver either on each startup or when attempting a switch from Intel HD to AMD/ATi, or AMD/ATi to Intel HD.
(dGP to iGP switching, vice versa)
I would only advise use of the reference driver if the person is not willing to risk crashes and rollbacks resulting in waste of productivity and time. Though if the user has the time and effort to attempt this reference driver, do it at your own discretion BUT DO backup your data or your risk losing them.
I believe AMD does not warrant that the driver are free from defects and probably the same in NBR's code of conducts. So use at the user's descretion.
AND I seen the other thread, this driver does not support HD 2000-4000.
Those are moved to
legacy status and using a driver that's on a Catalyst 12.6-12.8 branch BUT bundled with a Catalyst 13.1 software GUI (Branded as
"13.1 Legacy".
For HP users with 8000M series GPUs (2013 laptop models), these GPUs only have factory driver support at the moment and AMD hasn't released any reference driver for those just yet 13.1 doesn't work on it unless you "hack" it and it will void the digital signature.
Then again, system support varies so I'll not advise keeping it as a sticky, but as a regular floating thread like all others for precautionary reasons.

Practical case: newest official driver for my laptop (6930p) from HP is february 2010 and the 13.1 package is dated november 2012. Simply works, no workarounds needed.

Sorry if that was rude or so but the salient point's that the user has to be 100% aware of the risks with certain bugs in AMD's installer that are left unfixed.
It does not support 2000-4000. Only Legacy 13.1 supports 2000-4000. AMD has actually put up enough documentation to say that.
Please look at a 13.1 LEGACY'S driver version, I'll quote:

The last thing I have to say is that AMD has specifically built the driver site in such a way where 5000-7000 series GPUs are separated from 2000-4000 releases.
Please take a look, it justifies what I've just posted above.. If you own a 2000-4000 series GPU and you used 13.1 WHQL, you have not actually updated your driver but just Catalyst. If you used legacy, only then it will work completely but if you noticed the driver date, 8.9++ dates back to Catalyst 12.6-12.8. 12.11 Enduro and later are all version 9.x and AMD has not officially published any of these latest releases on the HD 2000-4000 page.
Looks like this guy over on the other thread already pointed it out what will happen if you used 13.1 WHQL on a HD 2000-4000.
And it looks like you're not using Catalyst 13.1 WHQL after all. You're using 13.1 Legacy. 8.970.100.7000 branch that dates back to 2012 June-Aug WHQL if you research it. You probably should specify you used the legacy version. But your update was successful.

As you say at the end my update was successful although first you say 13.1 doesn't support hd2k-4k and I had probably only the CCC updated when I clearly stated my driver itself is like 1,5 year newer than before and I've seen in the installer that the driver itself is being installed along with the CCC etc
Maybe we speak of different drivers. I am referring to those listed in this download page (on the right) and I don't know which are WHQL which are "legacy" because it is not stated there

I'll just correct the last statement now in your situation,
you actually downloaded the correct legacy and have it installed. Best of all, no workarounds required.
On the other hand, 5000M-7000M GPUs continue to use 13.1 WHQL instead of the legacy release.
Right but if it wasn't clear on legacy and the regular WHQL,
Legacy's a driver for dated AMD/ATI GPUs. Unfortunately AMD has phased out these GPUs faster than how Nvidia such issues. So its a near end of support product.
Performance updates on legacy GPUs stopped with like 12.6-12.8, the driver versions started moving so slowly because all the additions to the drivers are just simple bug/crash fixes and such instead of game optimisations. And the updates come probably just twice a year.
On the other hand, products supported in the regular WHQL release (5000M-7000M) are receiving full performance updates.
Long story short:
-Regular 13.1 WHQL works on 5000M-7000M as prescribed in the .inf installation whitelist file.
-13.1 Legacy works on 2000M-4000M.
But as always with updating AMD graphics, AMD does not have a good installer, certain things are still screwed up (the reason why you see me talk about BSODs etc) in the mobility product line, the desktop product line is largely ok.
For the same reasons, You probably notice that there are limited AMD Radeon HD + Intel notebooks circulating in the market (compared to Nvidia) because their reputation with mobility products have been adversely affected by the poor level of support.

So can you point out which speicfic downloads from AMD are WHQL , which are Legacy ? I guess those labeled "Latest AMD Catalyst™ Drivers for Radeon™ HD 7000, HD 6000 and HD 5000 Series" will be WHQL and those under are Legacy ?
Anyway I still have to assume that my main point of this and other posts is valid: regardless of which mobilty radeon generation you have, you can install the latest 13.1 driver package straight on all laptops without workarounds. (noting that for HD 2000-4000 the newest driver is dated november 2012)
WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Labs) drivers are signed by "Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher", if you double click the .CAT file you will see who signed it Microsoft or AMD

Details: Switchable Graphics control via CCC broken (If you clicked power saving GPU, you can no longer click the High Performance GPU option. It requires a manual enable via

Installation result: Unsuccessful even with workaround BSOD.
Details: Rolled back to Catalyst 12.6 Mobility WHQL, the most stable one for this specific SKU.
These machines are the ones I have direct access to.
All of these systems are supposed to use the 13.1 WHQL release (non-legacy), all hardware IDs are listed in the whitelist for the above machines and despite that, compatibility and installation issues occur.
Regarding the WHQL/legacy dilemma: I checked the links - file names - and only the win7/8/vista 32bit and 64bit legacy ones (those under HD200-4000) are not labeled as WHQL.
The XP ones are WHQL and I checked with mine current driver details 8.97.100.7 (HD3450) is WHQL signed too

Nice that you've done some testing but "crashes once a week" ? you write about laptops that had installed 13.1 and you were working on? then why didn't you mention all this when we started this conversation ? (which was my point asking at start to report if you can install them on other laptops)
by "custom OEM supplied driver lock" you mean you couldn't install those straight and the OEM lock is still there in the driver? if so then how did you specifically get rid of it ?
Summing up you refer to compatibility/stability which to me is always another topic for any driver.
My point is if one can install the driver and if it generally works.
Among those samples, a couple of them had key features turned broken. It is not working well on all laptops. Doesn't really generally work. Only specific releases are not plagued with random bugs. It is

Do people update drivers to simply increase version numbers?
How many people do not mind possible risks and loss in productivity?
How many people will risk data loss? (Some people freak out when system BSODs on each startup. They don't think about booting into safe mode... end up with a system factory reset... Happened to many systems with Catalyst 12.8 when system goes onto switchable graphics)
How many people would prefer a less reliable system over a more reliable one?
They are all related matters.
People update drivers to get bug fixes, performance enhancements and stability fixes. Not the opposite.
AMD does not have a good track record with releasing stable mobile drivers consistently. On this front, Nvidia fares a lot better and risks are a lot lower.
On the OEM lock, its usually embedded with Catalyst. Not the driver. 2 separate things.
What you just quoted is actually simple.
I already pointed out its 13.1 WHQL. Not legacy.
All files used are the same from Windows Vista to Windows 8.
By release dates of those computers, you can also actually see that they all do not refer to Windows XP PCs because Windows 7 was already the main selling Windows OS at that time.
