the partitioning you can cover with disk management within windows itself. as for mirroring, there are several apps out there - including drivecopy and ghost.

you can remove your current hard drive, pop in the new hard drive and install vista off dvd without a problem. that way, you have the new OS on your new drive and your existing drive is also still in tact.

I'd use a product like Acronis True Image and take an image of your drive on an external drive, then pull your SATA hard drive out of your laptop, pop the new one in and you can create 2 partitions, one for your Vista image and one for Windows 7. Do you have a Vista anywhere cd? If so that's also an option. I find it extremely useful to have a portable external drive but it depends on how much storage space you need. The nice thing is if you ever want a clean install you can just backup your files then restore the image and you are off and running. Then you put away your external drive with your image on it until you need it next time. No activation worries or hassles in resetting up the OS the way you want it. Anyway there are a few ways to do it, hope it helps.

    Cheers,
