this evening she shutdown out of the blue. i figured it was odd and turned it back on and what a surprise i got.
grey, red, blue and white pinstripe vertical lines across the entire screen. i watched it for a time and it took a few seconds but i noticed that in the lower right hand corner it was more faded then the rest of the screen.
then the fade began to grow the grow before it encompassed the entire screen. the lines were still there but the screen was much lighter. it almost looked like celluloid was burning through on an old projector.
i shut it off, let it cool for a few minutes and tried it again.
this time the top 4th of the screen had the white lines and below that it was simply black.
she's never been dropped. never had a spill. so i figured id do some searching and this does not seem to be a common problem.
i took pictures but they didnt come out well. i did attach it and you'll notice the lines. (the bright splotch is the flash)
here they are.

Here, the image began to fad as well. i cant really explain how it fades. kind of like a fog overtakes my screen very slowly.
my first thought was GPU which means id need a new mobo. they range in price from $1200 to $285 (this is the part # 447983-001)
my second thought after reading though this forum was that it could be the LCD because the moving fog seems weird and ive never seen something like that with a blown GPU. next im going to connect an old monitor to the output and see what happens.
my third thought was bad ram...can bad ram do this?
does anyone have any suggestions? have they seen this before? what would they do? no, i dont have a warranty. this was given to me by a company i used to work for.
any help is appreciated. night all.
regards,
Charles

ok fellas. i tried hooking it up to another monitor and the laptop worked fine. im using it right now.
it did want to run through a system repair, which i let it, because it didnt want to start up.
but now what? what could the problem have been? should i wait till it happens again and then never start up again? id like to nip the problem in the bud before it rears its head again. any ideas on what it was?
one thing i as thinking of was maybe it over heated. i was running AVG and playing medieval total war 2. i was in the middle of a battle with the english so the gpu must have been hot and now that i think of it i may not have had adequate venting around the back left (where the fan/heat sink assembly and gpu is)
anyway, just trying to bounce ideas off you guys. awesome forum. ill be here for a long time
thanks,
Charles. -
ok. im back on the desktop. after 10 minutes of using the laptop and reading my email the screen went fuzzy. i attached a pic.
notice the artifacting? overheating? what should i do?
the heatsink/fan assembly is $160 @ sparepartswarehouse.com but the fan spins...Attached Files:

brianstretch Notebook Virtuoso
Pavilion dv9548us specifications
Normally I'd just say that your NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GPU is defective as usual for these notebooks, in which case you'll need a new motherboard and HP isn't covering defective Intel notebooks much under their enhanced warranty program:

Your GPU is probably in the early stages of dying from thermal stress so it'll usually work until it heats up. If you never flashed in one of the newer BIOS updates that runs the fan 24x7 then it's almost certainly a failing GPU. Even with that the 8600 runs awfully hot. -
it does not look like the dv95xx is covered at all. well, thanks...lol
i found a motherboard for 280us$. dont know if its even worth it.
graphics trouble with pavilion dv9548us?
