I'll try asking this another way. Even if I can't get a slot loader, I'd still like to upgrade to a burner. Has anyone ever pulled the oem drive and replaced it?

I think it might work, but I'm thinking it might be recessed a bit because the bezel doesn't match.

    thanks! ;)

I read in some other forum that it is possible. Procedure is quite simple as per the service manual though. Only one screw to remove, and pull the drive with tray. I am not sure about if it is recessed. To me it looked like normal one. If you are not sure about the bezel, best bet is go with slot drive( no more bezel) :)

Anyway please update the forum with your result, so it can help someone else.

I know that it is fully possible, but it may be more difficult than usual. Have you tried looking at the DV1000 forums at www.dv1000forums.com? I'm sure they can help you out.

I would recommend a NEC burner. They are the best laptop burners in my opinion. The Panasonic slot loading burners I have seen aren't very good. I know Pioneer makes some too, but I am not as familar with them. Master/Slave can sometimes be an issue. You may want to drop Ultradrives.com a note. They specialize in amongst other things laptop drives. They may know what will works.

Thanks. I'll give ultradrives a yell. I'm starting to think I should have ordered this sucker with the DL drive in the first place (especially if I end up getting a tray drive any way!).

PS -- I've seen the manual and I know how the drive comes out -- I just would love a BTDT to ease my mind (Or to have me order a new order and cancel the old!).

BTW if you are wondering which mode it is in, it runs in Master Mode.

    Nice, that helps.

There's someone on fatwallet that apparently installed a pioneer slot loader into a compaq v2000z. He said it's recesssed and I'm not sure if he likes that. Otherwise, I get the impression that it works. Hopefully he'll respond to the post or PM and share some info.

Correct me if I'm wrong -- I think if it works in the v2000z, it should work in the dv1000, right?

A guy on fatwallet posted his v2000z pictures ( http://home.comcast.net/~mythtv-user/laptop/index.html). Looks like a doable swap, though I think the stock bezel looks better.

Anyone know if the quickplay feature will work OK with a swapped drive?

Anyone know what burner the DV1000 is coming with these days, anyhow?

    Thanks again!

I replaced a combo driver with a NEC burner on a Presario 2199. The NEC was set as master. I think HP uses NEC drives for the regular burners, not sure which ones the lightscribes are.
