    HI everyone,

I am the proud owner of an hp pavilion zd7058cl. Basic specs: P4 2.8, 2gb DDR sdram, 80gb hd, Nvidia GeForce FX Go5600 (64mb), 17-inch widescreen - overall, not a bad system and I've been very pleased with it.

However, I think I'm ready to upgrade my hd now. My current hd is a Hitachi Travelstar 80GB, 4200rpm (Model IC25N080ATMR04). Hp claims it is a ATA-100, but the datasheet I pulled up on it says it is a ATA-6. I'm wanting to go with a 7200rpm hd. Is this a good idea? Also, does it matter if I replace it with an ATA-6 or ATA-100? I've read it doesn't matter since any laptop manufactured after 1997 can utilize any laptop hd? Is this right? If someone could point me in the right direction and/or offer any suggestions I'd be grateful.

Your notebook will do ATA-100, IIRC ATA-6 and ATA-100 are the same thing (6th revision of ATA or 100MHz? Something like that...). I put a Hitachi 7K60 in my zv5000z which was the same generation as your zd7000. Worst case the HD is smart enough to back down to the highest ATA standard your notebook supports.

    Thanks for the reply!

I'm gonna go ahead and upgrade to a 7200rpm hd now. Just the ATA-6 vs. ATA-100 thing confused me. I'm guessing a 7200rpm hd won't add significant heat/stress to my battery, will it?

It'll add a little, but it's insignificant compared to your P4 CPU. Nothing to worry about.

Yeah, I was a little disappointed when I upgraded from 512MB to 2GB of RAM last year. I guess I was expecting a little bit more of a performance boost. Now, I'm hoping this hd upgrade with finally give my laptop the "kick" it needs. I want to thank everyone who replied to my post for your words of advice. I feel a lot more confident now to go ahead and upgrade to a 7200 rpm hd. Now all I have to do is find one.
