I was wondering if there was a expresscard 54 sata2 that will drive an external HD box with two 3.5" HD's? I tried an expresscard USB3.0 but one of the HD's would drop out under load. The expresscard 54 USB3.0 is powered via USB2.0 as is the HD box. Thought I would try sata2 if anyone knows. Thx

Does your disk box have its own power brick? If not you wont be able to power both disk drives tru express port as it wont provide enough power for bpth drives. I've explained that in m6700 owners thread and since im on the phone atm you should look for a more detailed explanation there. In essence 1 drive uses around 900mA making combined power draw of around 1800mA while express port can provide aroujd 1700mA under ideal conditions.
And that only stands if drives in your box are 2,5". -
The external HD box is powered by AC. Just did a search and found that one HD consumes 2.1A and since the other HD is larger and faster its probably at lease 2.1A. Both enterprise HD's.

Yeah the box is currently connected running through a USB2.0 port and is AC powered from wall socket.

And it works fine on USB 2.0? Since your box has its own power source it doesn't draw any power from express card slot so power provided for express card shouldn't be issue. Maybe express card was defective or picky when working with external devices? Did you check it with other stuff connected to it and do you have ability to test it on some other machine?

I'm stuck using USB2.0 for the moment. I did however run just one HD in the box through USB3.0 and eSata. It's when I throw in that additional HD when the problems start. With the expresscard USB3.0 the additional HD would drop-out under load. When using the laptops eSata/USB2.0 slot the box would not initialize. Thats because the eSata doesn't do port-multiply.

I'm out of ideas. But with that last information it looks like box has some issues not the usb ports, altho internet is full of reports that 3.0 is quite problematic. Whats the box exact model name?

Thx for the help btw.
The box is the Mediasonic HF2-SU3S2 ProBox 4 Bay Hard Drive Enclosure with USB 3.0 & eSATA. I've just got info from this website that there are expresscard eSata cards that do port-multiply. I'm gonna look into who bought this box with an expresscard with eSata.
hdx18t + expresscard 54 sata2 + external HD box
