I got my new DV5t for 2 weeks now and was frustrated with the heat (my system: P7350, Intel 4 Series GPU). only browsing the web and cpu temp was around 55c-60c. I can't imagine how high it will go if it is fully loaded. I ran Supper PI and the temp reached 70C. This is much worse than Sony and Dell laptops that I ran the same test at Bestbuy.
I picked P7350 and Intel GPU to minimize heat and battery usage but high heat is not what I expected.
here are a few things I noticed before clean install.
- CPU usage remains constantly at 25% to 50% with only one IE and even on idle
- temp remain 55c - 60c at idle and > 70c at load.
- CPU core speed and multiplier always remained at max (2GHz/7.5) on "high performance" power mode, even at idle.
Note that I disable "fan always on" from Bios since I want a quiet laptop.
Here are what I did in the following order:
- deleted HP partition, combine into one, then split into two: one for OS, other for data storage.
- format HHD
- preInstalled Intel AHCI SATA driver from usb stick before installing Vista
- Installed vista
- Installed Intel chipset (downloaded directly from Intel)
- Installed Intel Matrix Storage Manager (downloaded directly from Intel)
- Installed Intel grahic driver (downloaded directly from Intel)
- Installed drivers for other devices (download from HP)
- did not install quich launch and quick touch
- Did not install any HP apps except HP wireless assistant and Digital Persona Fingerprint
My laptop is much better now.
- at idle, CPU usage remains at 1% and temp stays at 40c to 45c.
- at load, Super PI ran at around 50c to 53c.
- CPU core speed and multiplier now fluctuate from 1.5GHz/6.0 to 2GHz/7.5 at "high performance" power mode depending on usage.

Nice work and congrats on getting lower temps with a cleaner installation. -
What's the advantage of pre-installing the SATA drivers?
heat and CPU usage reduced after clean install
