    Hey guys.

i just freshly installed vista...went like a pro thanks to the guide on the forums.

anyways, i installed the video drivers, but when i went to update the windows experience score by clicking teh link above the scores, it only gave me a 1 for both gaming graphics/aero graphics. My new laptop has the 8400GS so it should at least be a 3!

Can somebody help me figure out how to get aero working?

Also, there are 2 unknown "other devices" in teh device manager that have ?? next to them. I can't seem to get it fixed..can somebody help me?

    thanks so much!!!

What model do you have? HP should have all the drivers on their site.

Check to see if you have the QuickPlay driver installed because a lot of people seem to have problems with the QuickPlay driver.

There seems to be a bug with the WEI not refreshing after driver install. Navigate to C:\Windows\Performance\WinSAT\DataStore and delete any XML documents in this folder. Rerun the WEI and your score should be updated properly.

One of them may be the Quicklaunch driver, as that did not install automatically for me either. I used the download from the website and it installed fine.

Have you tried pointing Vista to your backup SWSetup disc to search for the other "unkown"? Look and see if your network adapter and WLAN is recognized while you are looking at device manager............

You can't use the forceware drivers from the nvidia site, they don't have the proper INF files to recognize your gpu. You need the ones from www.laptopvideo2go.com. Follow website instructions on extracting driver and replacing INF file....................

Here is the walkthrough I used (with pics): http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=11997

It sounds confusing at first but it actually quite easy. These extra steps for video driver installation are neccessary, as nvidia does not directly support mobile gpus (they leave it up to the OEMs).

    ok a funny thing happened.

so i went out to dinner with my family and then when i came back and turned on teh computer, vista automatically detected the nvidia 8400 GS card and since no drivers were installed, it installed them for me.

And now my WEI score has been bumped up to the mid 3's for both aero graphics/gaming graphics.

Question now is, should i install the drivers from laptopvideo2go.com now that its still working? like will it give me better performance/raise my WEI?

    dilemma..

Depends. Some custom drivers actually scored worse than the stock one in 3DMark06, others did only fractionally better. You will have to experiment to see what runs best on your system.

I won't bother installing drivers from laptopvideo2go because those drivers are beta drivers and from my experience they are usually a lot less stable.

Sometimes even newer beta drivers can be better than initial release drivers. As for stability, none of them were designed with mobile gpus in mind anyway so side effects can be expected.
