As soon as I enter my password, it freezes up. I have restarted several times, the same thing happens time and time again.

Any suggestions as to what i can do? And what might be wrong? I attempted an internet search for ideas but came up with nothing.

Perhaps should also note -- it is a Compaq Presario v2000, about 8 months old and never gave me a problem like this before.

Thanks for your time and consideration...

Try booting in Safe Mode. Hit F8 during bootup to display the menu to select that. Once you're logged on I'd do the usual virus/worm/spyware sweep and check your CPU temp. Burning and booting MemTest86+ wouldn't hurt either but bad memory is probably not the problem.

Do you have the Home or the Pro edition? In any case, you can try pressing SHIFT while Windows loads right up to the point of entering your password. This should prevent some programs from starting in the background, which I think is your problem. A virus, maybe..
