hello guys, i just got my HP 8710w with vista a month ago. It's a great machine. However, i found two problems related to the ac power :

    1. when i first start the laptop (incl. resuming from hibernation) with the ac plugged in, my games (Gears of war, Crysis) run like running on battery, the framerate drops 5-10 fps. I need to unplug the ac power and then plugin again, then everyting just runs fine and smoothly.
The power plan in vista is always set to high performance and it seems that only the gaming performance got affected.

    2. The laptop occasionally turns on authomatically when i plugin the ac power (from hibernation mode). I have disabled the wake up on LAN function in both vista and bios, but the problem still exist. This problem won't happen if i turn off my laptop with the shut down mode in windows.

Has anyone got the same problem before? does anyone has any hints on how to solve them? are these problems caused by hardware defects? any advice from you guys is appreciated!!!

    Thanks

Update the BIOS if you haven't got the latest one. That should help anytime.

try turning it on from hibernation with the ac plugged in without the battery inside the laptop...

thanks ... will give it a try later today ... hope that'll fix the problem ... my colleague got the exactly same machine and config. as mine, but it seems that his one doesn't have any problem with the original BIOS...

i've tried that way before, but it didn't fix the problem.

    ooops ... sorry about that

The BIOS got updated, the problems still exist ...

and I just realized that the laptop vibrates when it's turned on ... not as much as loading a DVD, but very noticeable comparing to all other laptops I got in my office ... anyone else got the same problem? thinking return it to HP and get a replacement

Looks like something is very wrong with your workstation. Vibrates? It's damn heavy for vibrations! I don't feel a single thing when mine is on.

i know ... we actually purchased 2x8710w at the same time with exactly the same configuration and settings ... the other one just works fine ... but mine one got couple of problems, it seems like it got a hardware defect ... can't believe HP got such poor QC on their flagship product ... very disappointed
