Hello,
My new dv2000t for some reason takes about 5-10 minutes to gain access to the internet after I plug in the ethernet cable. I have an SBC/AT&T DSL connection. What happens is that the icon in the system tray shows that a cable is plugged in, but says "Access: Local" only. I can't do anything on the web, but after waiting a few minutes, all of a sudden the blue globe appears in the tray icon, and then I have "Access: Local and Internet". Can anyone tell me what's going on? I don't think I have to install any SBC software on my new laptop, because the connection does function after a few minutes.
I should also mention that obviously with my current desktop nothing like this happens. Why is there a delay in connectivity for my dv2000t?
Please help!

Please, I need help because if there is something wrong with my laptop I need to return it within the 21 days! I'd like to figure out everything before it's mine to keep. -
Well, most DSL connections are PPPoE connections, as opposed to "always on" connections as most cable modems are. That means (among other things) that they don't connect until they are told to. Since you aren't having to input a username and password, I'm assuming your DSL modem is taking care of that. However, it sounds like it's just taking a really long time to connect -- partially due to Windows taking time to determine the connection type, make a connection with the modem, and finally the DSL modem connecting out. If you get a router and connect your DSL modem to that, you should be able to set it up so that the router maintains a DSL connection continuously, and your computer would get a full connection as soon as it's connected to the router.
Edit: saw your second post. I highly doubt there's anything wrong with your notebook. -
I agree with jadedraverla, connecting a modem should help with those issues.

Thanks all for the comments . . . Why doesn't this happen on my desktop? If I install the sbc/at&t software will it eliminate this connection time? It may be awhile before I get a router - anything else I can do?

You probably don't need the SBC software. Try to uninstall it. The ethernet card will usually detect the connection automatically and Windows takes over.
