i just exchanged my r3220ca (xp 3000+) for a r3310ca(xp 3000+) and the new one has a strange clicking/scratching noise coming from the hard drive. The new one has 60gb and the old one had 40gb i dont know if i should be worried. The hard drive works fine though and everything else seems the same in the r3310 as in the r3220 except for the hard drive. Also i noticed that both of them say that they run at 797mhz. When i change the power options to max battery it goes down to 398mhz but when i change it to always on or home/office they stay at 797mhz and not up to the max 1600mhz, can anyone help me change it to the max. help is greatly appreciated![]()

WinXP's speed display is broken. Use MobileMeter instead. Your speed display should be 800MHz when idle and 1600MHz under full load.
It sounds like your new laptop has a defective HD. Figure out who made the HD and download the manufacturer's HD diagnostic program. If it finds a problem, that will help you get the drive replaced but regardless, get it replaced. I suggest using this as an opportunity to swap in a Hitachi 2.5" 7200RPM HD, then dump the replacement HD on eBay when they send it to you.Last edited by a moderator: May 5, 2015 -

I think the issue with the CPU speed might be a BIOS issue. I think I remember reading that upgrading the BIOS resolved this problem. Also, use the MobileMeter program instead as BrainStretch recommended. Just change the setting to Always On and it should work.
The HDD noise may just be with the type of drive you have. Some other users in the Acer section complained about the Hitachi drives in their system making funny clicking noises. Nothing wrong, just the design of the drive. If it's clicking in a consistent pattern, then there could be a problem, but if it only clicks when ready/writing, then it's OK.
