    hi,

i purchased one compaq cq45-137tx in december. I guess it' similar to the dv4t models marketed in other countries.

    model details

there are couple of temperature issues with this lappy ( ambient temp 25-30C):

    1. at idle ( just media player or maybe a pdf file open), the cpu temp is at 43C, northbridge always above 50, gpu always above 55.hd also tends to operate at 45-48C. this is inspite of the fact that i am running this thing with no vents blocked ..and in fact the RAM, cmos battery and hd covers removed to allow better air circulation.

    2. at normal load ( game like burnout paradise, with utor going on in background), cpu tends to reach 60 C, gpu at 80 C , northbridge at 70C and hd at 60 C.

    3. cpu temp never seem to change really. tried using various s/w' like realtemp ( shows 28 C for gpu..which i dont think is feasible). only when i reboot after a high load session, the s/w' show higher temperatures ( and the notebook shows erratic behavior with display artifacts!).

    4. the only fan in the machine never appears to speed up or down. i don't have an issue with the noise, as long as it helps this thing run cooler.

now i noticed that the heat sink design is such that the northbridge and gpu are thermally connected to the HS assembley thru thick thermal pads..which don't seem to work. has anybody else faced this issue? any resolutions? i want to know what others have faced before i take it down to the service guys...

hp guys told me to update bios...which i readily did..does not seem to show any marked improvements. in fact, the cpu temp change problem seems to have propped up only after this bios update.

I don't think the machine' actually usable with these temperatures, esp if i put all the bottom lids back in place and keep it on my lap while travelling.

    Ambient temp now 34C

    1. I have the 107tx and temps now are 38C for CPU, 46C for the GPU, I guess the ACPI temp is the northbridge which is at 45C and hard disk 40C. I'm using a noteball to keep the back eleveated.

    2. Hottest the CPU has gone to is 72C with Orthos, GPU between 70C & 80C, the hard drive always below 50C (ambient 30C to 35C)

    3. AFAIK some Intel CPUs exhibit sticky sensors and may only be reliable at the higher temps. If you are using the P7350 CPU then you need to check your temperature software is set for Tjmax=90C, else your readings could actually be 10C or 15C higher than what you are seeing. There should be no display artifacts whatsoever.

    4. My fan seems to be tied into the CPU temp and doesn't appear to speed up until the CPU hits 54C then slows down again once below 46C. The GPU going up to 70C does not seem to influence the fan, however the fan is very quiet so I might not be noticing subtle changes. With this cooling system the CPU is between the bar for the cooling fins and the rest of the system and as the CPU heats up it makes the temperatures rise in the northbridge and GPU even if they are not doing any extra work.

Maybe they are using thick thermal pads because of poor tolerances, if you find out its a problem I would be interested to know.

Your hard drive certainly seems too hot.

My DV4 is always cookin if I leave it on High Performance.
I've found that right now, a good temp fix is to set a custom power plan, and set the max CPU usage to 75%. This keeps temps around 50-60c. The Low Power option thing sets the CPU to 50% and makes it nearly unusable.
I have an AMD proc and just assumed that it was crap (AMD vs Intel for lappie stuff).

Mine just hit 105c because I flipped it on high power for a minute. Turn it down and it drops back to 60c.
    I'd kill for a P8600
I'm sure the 1.3GHz SU xxx Intel Proc would be faster than this AMD one (Turion 2.1GHz)
One side of the laptop is blazing hot, the other with the DVD drive is ice cold lol.
I can flip it upside down and on High Preformance it will still be at 80+c on idle.

thanks man. yes, that cpu sensor is indeed completely stuck.does not push one C even on sensor test in real temp 3.0. i should get it changed, should'nt i?

right now the northbridge is at 70 C !!!

now m gonna monitor this thing with all lids in place. will let it burn down if it has to.

my computer use to run around 60-70 degrees idle , then i found the cause of the problem, check under the windows task manager whats taking up CPU usage...
i found that igfxpers.exe was hogging wayy to much cpu usage so i researched what it does. found out that basically it just constantly checks to see if you plugged in an external screen. Researched further, and the progra does not need to run at all. so i disabled it under msconfig and couldnt be happier, my idle temperature is now in the high 40's to low 50's. a little hotter than ideal, but hp computers run hot regardless.

hopefully you share the same problem, and i gave you a fix. if this is the problem feel free to pm me if you encounter any problems.

nope. no app by such name running. lately even keyboard giving problems. at random times, the keyboard becomes irresponsive and one has to press really hard to get the keypress done!
