If your notebook supports SATA drives, you should be able to use any 2.5" SATA drives.

I just installed a 2.5" WD 250gb SATA drive on my dv2000z and it's great. Got mine at Best Buy for $179. Installation was a breeze. Just swap the bracket and the plastic fascia where the contacts are. The drive is quiet running at 5200rpm.

I read somewhere that 320GB was the biggest for a laptop, but I would have thought it would be 500GB by now. Don't quote me on this, as I cannot find where I read that.

Toshiba is shipping their own 320GB laptop drive with their notebooks now. It is supposed to be available in retail by november. However the sweet spot in price right now seems to be in the 200GB area. I got my 200GB 7200rpm Hitachi drive from best buy for $123 for instance.

As far as I know, 2.5" SATA drives are only size-limited insofar as they are SIZE limited. As data storage methods improve, the drive sizes will increase. Right now, as mentioned, 200 - 250 GB seems to be the sweet spot, but I have no doubt that will change soon.
how big can the hdds go
